Reported war-risk insurance quotations for tankers making Saudi-linked calls at Yanbu reached about 3% of a vessel’s value by late September 2026, up from less than 1% in early July. That is a reported market quote, not a fixed tariff or a rate every tanker will pay.
What “premiums triple” means
The September figures describe quoted war-risk cover as a percentage of vessel value. Insurance Khabar reported the Yanbu quote at about 3%, compared with below 1% in early July, citing industry sources in reporting attributed to Reuters. Insurance Khabar’s September 28 report and Ship Universe’s September 25 summary both describe the increase.
The percentage is not a public rate card. A ship’s negotiated premium can vary with the vessel, voyage, insured value, flag, owner and operator, prior port calls, cargo origin, route and security profile. The reporting does not establish one price that applies to all tankers or all Red Sea transits.
How reported quotes compare by route
| Exposure described in reporting | Reported quote | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi-linked call at Yanbu | About 3% of vessel value | Less than 1% in early July 2026; late-September industry-source quotations reported by Insurance Khabar and Ship Universe. |
| Southern Saudi ports, including Jizan | Up to about 7% | Reported by Insurance Khabar; Jizan was described as roughly 50 miles from Yemen’s border. |
| Voyage through the Strait of Hormuz | About 6–9% | Comparison quoted in Insurance Khabar’s September reporting. |
| Red Sea transit without a Saudi connection | About 0.2–0.3% | Ship Universe described this as a typical quotation, subject to private negotiation. |
The contrast matters: the reported 3% figure concerns a Saudi-linked Yanbu call, not simply entry into the Red Sea. The cited reporting places unaffiliated Red Sea transit at a much lower indicative level, while southern Saudi ports and Hormuz voyages were reported at higher levels than Yanbu.

What those percentages could mean in dollars
Insurance Khabar gave approximate examples of about $3 million for seven-day cover for a large tanker at Yanbu and about $7 million for cover from southern Saudi ports or via Hormuz. It also reported that similar cover had cost at least $100,000 before the current conflict. These are reported illustrations, not universal quotes: the cost depends on the vessel’s insured value and the specific negotiated terms.
Why risk pricing is in focus
Insurance Khabar’s account links the higher pricing to a high-risk designation for waters near Bab el-Mandeb following Houthi attacks. It also reports that a drone strike earlier in September shut the East-West pipeline, which had supported Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea route as an alternative to Hormuz. The report further says the United States was not providing comparable military air coverage for Red Sea ships. These details are reported context; the sources do not quantify how much each factor contributed to the premium increase.

Insurance cost is only one route decision
A July report described the TORM Innovation, after loading naphtha at Yanbu, diverting toward Asia via Gibraltar and the Cape of Good Hope rather than sailing through Bab el-Mandeb. SeaNews Türkiye said that routing could add about 30 days and attributed the decision to crew safety. That is an example from July 2026, not evidence of a current or universal route choice. SeaNews Türkiye’s July 25 report also described earlier pricing that differed by geography, including lower rates around northern ports and higher rates for some southern Red Sea and Saudi-linked exposures.
Who pays the war-risk premium?
The quoted insurance cost does not by itself determine who ultimately bears it. That depends on the freight contract and its allocation of war-risk expenses between the parties. A July report framed the practical issue as whether a route “can it be crossed or not?” and who bears the expense; the available reporting does not establish a standard contract term that settles the question for every voyage. Operators and cargo interests need to check the specific charterparty or other freight agreement alongside the insurer’s negotiated terms.

How to read the reports
The September percentages are attributed to unnamed industry sources cited in Reuters-based reporting, rather than to a published insurer or regulator dataset. Actual negotiated premiums are private, and the quotations may change as route conditions and underwriting assessments change. A useful comparison therefore keeps the route, date, exposure, cover period and vessel value attached to each number instead of treating “3%” as a universal Red Sea insurance price. Talay Insight’s September 29 analysis provides additional secondary context on Yanbu and risk pricing.
