A “public production dataset” in Sanity means the content in a dataset named production can be read without authentication. It does not mean anyone can edit it. Sanity’s Next.js quickstart says it plainly: “Sanity datasets are public by default.” This guide covers how to set up a Studio and Next.js pair that way, which values are safe to expose, which must stay server-side, and what preview and deployment need to work.
What “public dataset” does and does not mean
Sanity’s Next.js quickstart states that datasets are public by default, and the CLI init reference describes --dataset-default as setting up a public dataset named production. Two separate things follow from that:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Reading published content is open, so a frontend can fetch it without a secret.
- Editing in Studio still requires login. Sanity’s deployment documentation says serving the static Studio files does not make editing public, and that logged-in Studio access and private Content Lake data are protected by authentication.
The name “production” alone does not make anything public. Treat it as the default, normal setup path, not as a special mode.
Option 1: Start from a clean Studio
The quickstart’s command creates a Studio with a production dataset:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
npm create sanity@latest -- --dataset production --template clean --typescript --output-path studio
Use this when you want to build your own schema and Next.js app from scratch.
Option 2: Use a documented starter (Schema UI as an example)
No single repository is implied by the topic. Sanity’s template page for Schema UI — Next.js Sanity Starter is one concrete, documented example: a monorepo containing a frontend and a Studio.

Route A: initialize through the CLI
npm create sanity@latest -- --template serge-0v/next-js-sanity-starter
Per the template guide, this creates a Sanity project, adds an API read token, configures localhost CORS, sets environment variables, clones the repository and installs dependencies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Route B: clone the monorepo
Clone the repository, install dependencies with pnpm, create a project in Sanity Manage, add the localhost CORS origins, and copy the example environment files. This gives you direct control but means you do the wiring yourself.

When started together, the Next.js app runs at localhost:3000 and Studio at localhost:3333.
Optional sample data
The guide’s import example:
cd studio
sanity dataset import sample-data.tar.gz production --replace
Warning: --replace replaces existing data in the target dataset. Check that production holds nothing you want to keep before running it.

Which environment variables are safe to expose
| Variable | Role | Exposure |
|---|---|---|
NEXT_PUBLIC_SANITY_PROJECT_ID |
Identifies the project | Public; the browser client needs it for live subscriptions |
NEXT_PUBLIC_SANITY_DATASET |
Dataset name, e.g. production |
Public, same reason |
SANITY_API_READ_TOKEN |
Read token for draft content | Server-only; never in a NEXT_PUBLIC_ variable |
According to Sanity’s Visual Editing guide, the read token is not exposed directly in the client bundle. In the documented defineLive integration it is shared with the browser only while Draft Mode is active. The client configuration guide says the same of the viewer token. These statements describe that specific integration; they do not make an arbitrary token safe in custom code.
The same rule applies to Studio: the deployment docs warn against placing sensitive tokens in Studio configuration files, because built Studio files are served without authentication.

Getting preview and Visual Editing to work
The Visual Editing guide describes four contracts between the two apps. Most broken previews trace back to one of them:
- The Studio’s
previewMode.enablepath must match a real route in the Next.js app. - Resolved document URLs must map to actual frontend routes.
stega.studioUrlmust point to the running Studio (the right host and port locally, the deployed URL in production).- The frontend origin must be added to the project’s CORS settings with Allow credentials enabled.
Deploying Studio and frontend
Per the Studio deployment docs, Studio builds to static files. The frontend and Studio need not be one deployment; the starter guide discusses separate environment configuration and an optional separate Vercel project for Studio.
| Sanity-hosted | Self-hosted | |
|---|---|---|
| Who serves the files | Sanity, on a chosen sanity.studio hostname |
Your static host |
| Host requirement | None beyond deploying | Must support single-page-app routing |
| CORS | Handled for this path | You add the Studio domain to project CORS |
| Automation | Deploy from CLI | Services such as Vercel and Netlify can redeploy from a repository, per Sanity’s docs |
Whichever you choose, add each production origin (frontend and any self-hosted Studio) to CORS, and confirm that environment variables are set in the hosting dashboard, not just locally.
