SanDisk PRO-G40 Portable SSD: Key Pros, Cons, and Buying Advice

The PRO-G40 combines high Thunderbolt speeds with a rugged enclosure, but its USB performance is much slower. Here are the key trade-offs and compatibility checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 is a rugged portable SSD that can deliver very high transfer speeds when connected to a compatible Thunderbolt host. Its USB 3.2 Gen 2 fallback is useful, but considerably slower. The premium makes most sense if your computer supports Thunderbolt and your work benefits from fast transfers and a reinforced drive; USB-only users should weigh less expensive alternatives.

PRO-G40 pros and cons at a glance

Pros Cons
High potential throughput over Thunderbolt 3 Top speeds require a compatible Thunderbolt host
USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection provides a fallback USB performance is far below Thunderbolt-class speeds
IP68 rating and stated drop and crush protection Ruggedness does not make the drive indestructible
Available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities The 4TB model is described as expensive by an independent guide
Aluminum core is designed to draw heat away from the drive The supplied cable is described as short; no USB-A cable is included, according to the same guide
Five-year limited warranty Filesystem and host compatibility may require setup or reformatting

How fast is the PRO-G40?

Speed depends on the connection between the drive and your computer. SanDisk specifies up to 3000MB/s read and 2500MB/s write over Thunderbolt 3. Over USB 3.2 Gen 2, its stated maximums are up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write. SanDisk says these figures come from internal testing and actual performance can vary with the host device, use conditions, and capacity. See the PRO-G40 data sheet.

Thunderbolt results in independent testing

Digital Camera World measured a maximum of 2800MB/s read and 2604MB/s write in its 2026 guide. It says Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5 is needed to reach the highest results; its reported USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds were below 1000MB/s. These are that publication’s test results, not a guarantee for every computer or workload. Read its video-editing storage guide.

What happens over USB?

The USB connection makes the drive usable with compatible USB-C hosts, but it does not deliver Thunderbolt-class performance. If your computer has only USB, judge the PRO-G40 against other USB SSDs using their real-world performance on a similar host—not its Thunderbolt maximums.

How rugged is the PRO-G40?

SanDisk lists IP68 dust and water resistance, 3m drop protection, and 4000lb crush resistance. The company notes that these figures are based on internal testing; they describe tested protection, not immunity to damage in every situation. The product page and data sheet provide the vendor’s specifications: PRO-G40 product details and data sheet.

The aluminum core is intended to help manage heat. SanDisk describes it as a “Cool aluminum core [that] pulls heat away from the internal drive to help maintain super-fast transfer speeds.” This is the manufacturer’s design claim, not a promise that performance will remain constant in every environment or long transfer.

Does the PRO-G40 work with a Mac or Windows PC?

Check both the computer’s port and the drive’s filesystem before buying. SanDisk lists macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 via reformatting on its product page. The data sheet identifies exFAT as the supplied filesystem and says APFS is available by reformatting. Reformatting changes the filesystem and can erase data, so back up anything on the drive first and choose a format compatible with the devices that need to share it.

  • For maximum speed: Confirm your computer has a compatible Thunderbolt 3, 4, or 5 port. A USB-C-shaped port alone does not establish Thunderbolt support.
  • For USB use: Confirm the host supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 for the stated USB performance tier; a slower host may limit throughput.
  • For cross-platform use: Check that the chosen filesystem works across your Mac and Windows devices before copying important files.

Capacities, cable, and practical drawbacks

SanDisk lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions. Compare the price per usable terabyte for the exact capacity you need, along with the interface speed and protection you will actually use. Digital Camera World describes the largest capacity as expensive, the included cable as short, and notes that no USB-A cable is included. Those limitations matter particularly if you have a USB-A-only computer or need more cable reach. Check the exact package contents for the SKU and region you intend to buy.

Is the SanDisk PRO-G40 worth it?

It is most compelling for a workflow that can use Thunderbolt speeds and benefits from a drive designed for dust, water, drop, and crush protection—for example, moving large video files or high-resolution photo libraries between compatible workstations. Its USB fallback adds flexibility, but does not erase the performance gap or necessarily justify the premium if USB is your only connection.

Before choosing it, compare competing drives on the host interface and throughput your computer can actually use, capacity and cost per terabyte, protection ratings, filesystem support, and included cable options. If you do not need ruggedness or Thunderbolt performance, a less expensive USB SSD may be the better fit.
