Connect a compatible SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD directly to your iPhone, then open Files > Browse and select the drive under Locations. For SanDisk’s listed iPhone workflow, the drive must be formatted as exFAT; password-protected drives and phone connection adapters are not supported. Check SanDisk’s compatibility table for your exact SSD model and iPhone before connecting.
What you need before connecting
- A compatible iPhone and SSD revision. SanDisk lists supported drives for iPhone 15, 16, and 17 series, including several Extreme Portable SSD model numbers. Compatibility is model-specific, so check the current SanDisk compatibility table rather than assuming every revision works with every iPhone.
- An exFAT-formatted drive. SanDisk requires exFAT for this workflow. Although Apple supports other filesystems for external storage in broader circumstances, follow SanDisk’s narrower guidance for the listed SanDisk drive setup.
- No password protection. SanDisk says password-protected drives are not supported for this iPhone workflow.
- A direct, compatible connection. SanDisk says phone connection adapters are unsupported. For a USB-C iPhone, connect the drive directly with a compatible cable or connector; do not treat an adapter as the default solution.
SanDisk’s support page is marked as of March 18, 2026, and shows an update date of September 5, 2026. Confirm the compatibility table when setting up a particular model because supported revisions can differ.

Connect the SSD and open it in Files
- Connect the SSD directly to the iPhone using the compatible cable or connector for the devices. Avoid a phone connection adapter.
- Open the Files app on the iPhone.
- Tap Browse. Under Locations, tap the SSD to view its folders and files. If Locations is not visible, tap Browse again.
Apple describes external-device access through Files and other supported apps in its iPhone User Guide.
Copy or move files between iPhone and SSD
Connecting the SSD makes its contents available in Files; it does not automatically back up every photo or file on the iPhone. In Files, choose the items you want, then use the available copy or move actions to place them in a folder on the SSD or on the iPhone. SanDisk describes using Files to select, copy, move, and organize content between iPhone 15 and its drive.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
If the SSD does not appear
- Reseat the connection. Disconnect and reconnect the direct cable or connector, then check Files > Browse > Locations.
- Verify the model and format. Check that the exact SSD revision is listed for your iPhone and that the drive is formatted as exFAT.
- Check password protection. A password-protected drive is not supported for SanDisk’s listed workflow.
- Do not add an unsupported phone adapter. SanDisk’s compatibility guidance says phone connection adapters are unsupported.
- Consider power only if needed. Apple notes that some external hard drives may need external power. If the drive does not receive enough power and the iPhone has USB-C, Apple says a powered USB hub can be used. This is conditional troubleshooting, not required equipment for every portable SSD.
What to expect from transfer speed
SanDisk’s 2024 product sheet rates the drive at up to 1,000 MB/s read and 950 MB/s write, based on SanDisk internal testing; actual performance may be lower depending on the host device, interface, usage conditions, and other factors. Those figures are manufacturer ratings, not an iPhone-specific independent test. See SanDisk’s product sheet for the stated qualifications.
The iPhone and cable also constrain speed. Apple says iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C and can connect to external storage. For the USB 3 workflow, Apple lists Pro models and requires a USB 3-capable cable; the USB-C cable included with iPhone supports charging and USB 2 speeds. Therefore, neither the SSD’s rated maximum nor a USB 3 connection should be assumed for every iPhone-and-cable combination. Apple’s details are in its USB-C connection guidance.

SanDisk’s product sheet also lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), 1 TB and 2 TB capacities, and a five-year limited warranty. These are sheet-level specifications, not a guarantee for every retail SKU; usable capacity is lower than nominal capacity, specifications may change, and current warranty terms should be checked for the exact product.
