Samsung and AMD have announced an HBM4 and advanced-memory collaboration, with foundry and advanced packaging also named as areas of cooperation. But no public announcement confirms that AMD has awarded Samsung a chip-manufacturing contract—or that HBM supply is conditional on one. Samsung has an opportunity to pursue broader AMD business; a foundry win remains unconfirmed.
What Samsung and AMD have actually announced
On March 18, 2026, Samsung and AMD announced a memorandum of understanding covering primary HBM4 supply for AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI455X AI accelerator and advanced DRAM solutions for sixth-generation EPYC processors, codenamed “Venice.” Samsung described the collaboration as spanning next-generation memory, foundry and advanced packaging. Samsung’s announcement does not disclose an AMD foundry award, order quantity, price, exclusivity or binding supply allocation.

That distinction matters: naming foundry and packaging as collaboration areas is evidence that the companies are discussing a broad relationship, not evidence that Samsung will manufacture AMD’s logic chips.
Why HBM4 could matter to Samsung’s foundry ambitions
High-bandwidth memory is a key component in AI accelerators, and Samsung can present memory, logic-base-die manufacturing and advanced packaging as parts of an integrated offering. Samsung said in February 2026 that it had begun mass production and commercial shipment of HBM4, using sixth-generation 1c DRAM and a 4nm logic base die. That gives context to the integration pitch, but does not show that AMD selected Samsung for any logic fabrication. Samsung’s HBM4 announcement describes the company’s own production milestone and technology choices.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
For Samsung, winning a memory relationship could create a reason to discuss additional manufacturing services with AMD. The leverage idea is therefore a strategic possibility, not a disclosed contract term: the public information does not establish that Samsung tied HBM4 access to AMD awarding foundry work.
What the latest reporting says—and does not say
On October 8, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that AMD CEO Lisa Su was visiting South Korea to seek additional HBM supply, citing Chosun.biz. The report quoted Su saying, “We are going to talk about our broader partnership,” and described Samsung as hoping to convert its memory relationship with AMD into foundry orders.

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability

The quote signals planned discussion, while the foundry-order prospect is reported as Samsung’s ambition. Neither establishes that a contract was signed, that AMD made a supplier decision, or that memory supply and foundry selection are linked.

Has AMD picked Samsung to manufacture its chips?
The public evidence cited here does not establish that AMD has chosen Samsung to manufacture logic chips. It identifies the MI455X and Venice programs in the memory collaboration, but gives no foundry customer award, chip order, contract value or timing. A foundry award should be treated as unconfirmed unless AMD or Samsung publicly identifies one.

The same restraint applies to supply terms. The MOU announcement does not state HBM4 volume, price, exclusivity or guaranteed allocation. Samsung separately expects its 2026 HBM revenue to exceed three times its 2025 level, but that is a company forecast for its overall HBM business—not a disclosed AMD commitment or independently verified outcome. Samsung’s business announcement gives the company’s expectation.

A confirmed foundry win would require a clearer public signal than a broad MOU or reported discussions. Relevant evidence would include a company announcement naming Samsung as a manufacturing supplier for an AMD chip, or a disclosed foundry order with identifiable scope. Until then, the collaboration supports discussion of potential integration across memory, foundry and packaging, but not a claim that Samsung is already making AMD’s logic chips.

For evaluating the strategic fit, the useful questions are whether Samsung can supply the required HBM, whether its foundry and packaging capabilities meet AMD’s needs, and whether either company confirms a specific manufacturing commitment. The cited announcements do not provide comparable supplier terms or establish AMD’s logic-fabrication selection.
