The small green dot at the top of a Samsung phone screen means an app is using the camera, microphone, or both. It is a privacy indicator—not, by itself, evidence of spying, malware, or a hardware problem. Tap the indicator in the notification shade or Quick Settings to see which app is accessing a sensor.
What the green dot means
Samsung and Android describe the indicator as a real-time notice that an app is accessing the camera or microphone. It may appear for either sensor or for both. Its presence tells you that access is happening; it does not establish whether that access is appropriate.

Samsung Design puts it plainly: “The green icon on the top is not a warning.” The indicator is intended to make sensor use visible so you can investigate and take action if you do not expect it. Samsung Design’s explanation of One UI 4 describes the feature.

Identify the app using the camera or microphone
- When the green dot appears, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification shade or Quick Settings.
- Tap the green indicator. Samsung says the phone will show which app is using the camera or microphone.
- If the app or its activity is unexpected, decide whether to change that app’s permissions or temporarily block sensor access across apps.
The exact gesture and display can vary with the Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy camera and microphone indicator instructions explain the indicator and how to check it.

Change access for one app
To keep a particular app from accessing a sensor, review its permissions in Settings. Samsung documents these routes, though menu names and placement can differ by device, software, and region:
- Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager: choose Camera or Microphone to review apps with that permission.
- Settings > Apps > More options > Permission manager: choose Camera or Microphone.
From the relevant permission list, select the app and change its permission. Blocking access affects that app, not every app on the phone. Samsung’s green-dot and permission guidance documents the permission routes; the available wording may differ on your Galaxy.

Temporarily block camera or microphone access across apps
Supported devices running Android 12 or later provide device-wide camera and microphone access controls. Look for Camera access and Microphone access in Quick Settings or in Privacy settings. The exact controls available on a Galaxy phone depend on its software and regional variant.

Check recent sensor activity with Privacy Dashboard
Where supported, Android’s Privacy Dashboard shows a timeline of when apps accessed sensitive information, including the camera and microphone. It can help you review recent activity after the indicator disappears. Availability and menu placement depend on the device and software. Android explains the feature in its guide to access to sensitive information.

- It does tell you: an app is accessing the camera, microphone, or both at that moment.
- It does not tell you: whether the app has a legitimate reason, or whether it is malicious. Check which app is active and review its permissions and expected behavior.
- It is not, by itself: a diagnosis of a hardware fault or a security warning.
Samsung’s published instructions describe the feature on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later, and warn that steps can vary by region and device. If your menus do not match the routes above, search Settings for “Permission Manager,” “Camera access,” or “Microphone access.”
