Samsung turned a weight specification into a slapstick advertisement for the Galaxy S25 Edge. In a Samsung Korea social-media video reported on May 15, 2025, two phones each start suspended from 60 balloons. As the balloons are popped one by one, the heavier phone sinks first while the S25 Edge remains aloft. The unnamed rival is widely understood to be an iPhone, although Samsung does not identify a model on-screen.
What happens in Samsung’s balloon video?
The setup is deliberately simple: each phone is attached to a cluster of 60 balloons, then the balloons are removed sequentially. The phone requiring more lift descends faster. Samsung’s handset stays floating longer, making the weight difference visible without a specification chart.
That is a marketing demonstration, not a controlled measurement. The video does not disclose the balloon type, lift capacity, air conditions, string arrangement, phone configuration, or whether either device had a case or accessories attached.
Why the joke feels aimed at Apple
Samsung never has to say “iPhone.” The second phone is unnamed, but the framing invites viewers to supply Apple as the target. Turning a difference of a few dozen grams into a public drop gives the campaign its playground-taunt quality: Samsung is effectively saying its phone is so light that balloons can win the argument.

Secondary coverage compared the S25 Edge with the iPhone 16 Pro and described Samsung’s phone as about 26 grams lighter and 2.5 millimeters thinner. Those are comparison figures from that coverage, not a formally identified iPhone test conducted in the advertisement. The ad itself should therefore be described as an implied iPhone comparison.
The Galaxy S25 Edge behind the stunt
Samsung announced the S25 Edge’s full specifications on May 12, 2025. Its headline design is a 5.8-millimeter body weighing 163 grams, unusually light for a phone with a 6.7-inch display.

Why balloons are an effective sales pitch
Weight is difficult to dramatize. A spec such as 163 grams means little until viewers see one phone fall while the other remains suspended. The balloons turn an abstract advantage into a single, instantly readable image, and leaving the rival unnamed makes the punchline feel mischievous rather than like a conventional side-by-side chart.

What the stunt does not prove
- It does not identify the competing model or establish that it was an iPhone 16 Pro.
- It provides no independently measured mass for either phone.
- It discloses no balloon specifications, lift calculations, weather conditions, friction effects, or popping protocol.
- It does not say whether cases, screen protectors, storage variants, or other accessories were used.
- It says nothing about battery endurance, camera quality, performance, thermal behavior, repairability, or price.
Balloon lift can change with balloon size, string length, air movement, and the order in which balloons are popped. The correct takeaway is that Samsung is dramatizing a real published weight claim, not publishing a repeatable phone benchmark.
The real trade-off: thinness versus capacity
A 163-gram phone can be more pleasant to hold during long reading sessions and easier to carry in a pocket. But the S25 Edge is still a large 6.7-inch device: its footprint can make one-handed reaching difficult even when its weight is low.

The 3,900-mAh typical battery is an important counterpoint to the thin body. Capacity alone cannot predict endurance, and no battery-life conclusion follows from the balloon video. Gamers, frequent travelers, hotspot users, and anyone who dislikes charging may reasonably value a thicker phone with more battery room.
Samsung says the S25 Edge uses an optimized mounting structure and heat-dissipation design; those are manufacturer claims, not independent proof of superior sustained performance. The 200-megapixel main camera is a headline feature, but buyers seeking maximum zoom or broader camera versatility may prefer an Ultra-class model. Titanium, strengthened glass, and IP68 resistance describe the construction and rating; they are not a guarantee against drops or repair costs.

How it sits in Samsung’s lineup
Samsung corporate material lists the Galaxy S25 at 162 grams, nearly the same raw weight as the Edge, but with a smaller display and a less extreme thinness design. The company’s interim report is the source for that figure.
The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the opposite priority: a broader flagship feature set, larger battery and more camera hardware in exchange for substantially more weight. Samsung’s 25% lighter comparison is a corporate positioning claim, not a measure of overall superiority. Conventional Apple or Android flagships remain sensible alternatives if endurance, camera flexibility or ecosystem matters more than thinness. Foldables offer a different proposition—more display area rather than the lightest conventional slab—and bring their own thickness, durability and price trade-offs.
Verdict: petty, clever and strategically revealing
The balloon stunt is petty because it converts a subtle physical advantage into a public taunt aimed, by implication, at Apple. It is also smart advertising. Before viewers get lost in processor benchmarks, AI features or camera modes, Samsung gives them one memorable fact: the Galaxy S25 Edge weighs 163 grams and is only 5.8 millimeters thick.

That makes the video an effective explanation of the Edge’s design, not proof that it is the best phone for everyone. Choose it for the combination of low weight, a large display and Samsung’s ecosystem; investigate independent battery, camera and thermal testing before treating the stunt as evidence of broader superiority.
