Samsung Wi‑Fi Direct: How to Find It and Connect a Device

Turn on Wi‑Fi Direct from a Galaxy device’s Wi‑Fi settings, select a compatible nearby endpoint, and accept its connection request. Try the alternate menu path if needed.

On many Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open Settings → Connections → Wi‑Fi, turn Wi‑Fi on, then tap Wi‑Fi Direct. If that option is not shown, check More options (⋮) → Wi‑Fi Direct on the Wi‑Fi screen. Select the nearby compatible device and accept the connection request on that device when prompted. Menu paths and endpoint support vary by model and software version.

What Wi‑Fi Direct does—and does not do

Wi‑Fi Direct lets compatible devices communicate directly, without a wireless router or access point. Connecting this way does not join the devices to your home Wi‑Fi network or provide internet access. Samsung lists devices such as printers, cameras, and TVs as possible endpoints, but support depends on the specific model and the task you want to perform. Samsung Gulf’s Wi‑Fi Direct guidance describes the feature and examples.

Find Wi‑Fi Direct on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet

On many Galaxy devices, the setting is within the Wi‑Fi screen. Samsung manuals and support pages document more than one route, so try these in order:

  1. Open Settings → Connections → Wi‑Fi and switch Wi‑Fi on.
  2. Tap Wi‑Fi Direct. If it is not visible, tap More options (⋮) → Wi‑Fi Direct from the Wi‑Fi screen.
  3. Wait for the device list to populate, then select the intended compatible device.
  4. Accept the connection request on the other device when prompted. The connection is not complete until that device accepts it.

The Galaxy S9+ manual documents the Connections → Wi‑Fi → Wi‑Fi Direct path, while another Samsung Gulf support page shows the More options route. These examples are not a universal menu map; labels and availability can differ across generations, software versions, and regions. If neither path appears, consult the manual for your exact model.

If the device you want is not listed

  • Ask the other device’s user to turn on its Wi‑Fi Direct feature. Samsung’s phone and tablet Wi‑Fi guidance says both devices need Wi‑Fi Direct enabled.
  • Confirm that both devices support Wi‑Fi Direct; having Wi‑Fi alone does not establish support for this feature.
  • Return to the Wi‑Fi Direct screen and check for the device again. If it still does not appear, look up Wi‑Fi Direct instructions in the endpoint’s own manual.

Connecting to a TV, printer, or camera

Do not assume every Samsung TV or peripheral supports Wi‑Fi Direct. Samsung’s TV e‑manual states that availability depends on the model. Check the exact device manual for whether Wi‑Fi Direct is supported and for any additional steps required to start the connection. The cited Samsung TV e‑manual also says to disable Wi‑Fi Direct to maximize network performance when a 6 GHz access point is connected; that advice applies to the TV model covered by that manual, not universally to Galaxy devices or TVs.

Wi‑Fi Direct establishes a device connection, but it does not guarantee that every file, printing, streaming, or mirroring workflow will work across every device combination. For printing, for example, confirm that the printer’s own manual explicitly supports Wi‑Fi Direct and explains the required print workflow.
