There is no single permanent “crown” for Samsung or Apple. Samsung led Apple in IDC’s worldwide smartphone shipment figures for Q2 2026, while Apple led Samsung in Omdia’s figures for Q4 2025. Shipment leadership is a market measure, not a verdict on which phone is better for you. For a buyer, the more useful choice is between the operating system, ecosystem, features and price of the exact models available in their market.
Who leads smartphone shipments?
It depends on the quarter and the source. IDC’s final historical results put Samsung at 22.7% of worldwide smartphone shipments in Q2 2026, compared with Apple at 20.2%. IDC reported 62.7 million Samsung shipments and 55.7 million Apple shipments for that quarter. These figures describe phones shipped worldwide during Q2, not sales to end users, active users, profits or product quality. In a different quarter, Omdia reported Apple at 25% and Samsung at 18% of worldwide smartphone shipments in Q4 2025. That result does not conflict with IDC’s later Q2 2026 figures: the reports cover different periods and come from different market-research firms. Together, they show why a brand’s lead should be tied to a named period and measure rather than treated as permanent. Omdia’s Q4 2025 results give the earlier comparison.
Samsung’s investor disclosure reports its own annual global smartphone market shares by quantity as 19.2% in 2025, 18.3% in 2024 and 19.7% in 2023, attributing the figures to TechInsights. This is Samsung’s reported series; the cited passage does not provide a methodologically matched Apple series, so it should not be used as a direct annual head-to-head. IDC senior research director Nabila Popal said of Q2 2026: “Q2 confirms exactly what we predicted: this is not a uniform downturn; memory crisis is favoring premium players and punishing vendors exposed to the low end.” This is Popal’s interpretation of market conditions, not a claim that one manufacturer makes better phones. IDC’s Q2 2026 report supplies the quarter context.
What does “the crown” mean to a phone buyer?
Market share answers how many devices a company shipped during a defined period. It does not settle questions such as which phone takes the photos you want, which operating system suits your habits, or which device is the better value at a local retailer. Apple’s 2025 Form 10-K lists price, product and service features, quality and reliability, design, innovation, third-party software and accessories, and service and support among the factors on which it competes. It helps to separate four questions: who shipped more phones in a particular quarter; which company’s ecosystem fits your existing devices; which specific phone better meets your needs; and which configuration is worth its price where you live. Those answers can point to different brands.

Apple: a closely integrated product and services approach
Apple says it designs and develops nearly the entire solution for its products, including hardware, operating systems, applications and related services. For buyers, that makes the connections among devices, software and services a central part of the Apple proposition. Whether that integration is an advantage depends on the devices and workflows you already use; it does not make iOS objectively better for every person. Apple’s filing describes its approach.

Samsung: Galaxy devices across several form factors
Samsung’s investor disclosure describes a Galaxy ecosystem spanning phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart rings and wireless earbuds, as well as Samsung Wallet and Samsung Health. Consider which of these you actually use and whether the devices and services you want work together in your region. Availability and feature compatibility can vary by country, device and service. How do the current flagship examples compare?
For a premium-phone decision, a useful current pairing is iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. It is a flagship-only comparison, not a stand-in for every Samsung or Apple phone. If you are shopping for a less expensive phone, compare models in the price range you can actually buy; differences in features and value across a brand’s lineup can matter more than a flagship head-to-head.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: Apple’s current Pro reference point
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Apple’s announcement highlights a 48 MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the A20 Pro chip, and Siri AI rolling out in beta with iOS 27. The specifications list iOS 27, USB-C and MagSafe wireless charging for the Pro lineup. Apple says feature availability can vary by language and region, so check what works where you live. Galaxy S26 Ultra: check the exact model and local offer
Samsung said in its FY 2025 results announcement that it planned to launch the S26 series in Q1 2026 and expand AI offerings across its device and service ecosystem. For the S26 Ultra’s current specifications, price and availability, use Samsung’s product information for your country and the precise configuration you are considering. A secondary comparison can help identify questions about display, cameras, software, battery and other features, but reported prices and model details can change and should not replace local manufacturer information. Which should you choose?
Start with the operating system and your existing devices
If you already prefer iOS or Android, or depend on particular apps and workflows, treat that as a primary decision rather than trying to crown a universal winner. List the phone, computer, tablet, watch, earbuds and services you currently use. Then check which of them will work with the new phone and what you would need to replace or migrate. The practical cost and effort of switching can outweigh a small spec difference.
Compare the same price conditions
Compare phones in the same country, at the same point in time, with the same storage tier and purchase conditions. Carrier offers, trade-ins, promotions and local availability can change the effective price; an unqualified price from another market or date is not a reliable comparison. Check the exact model and configuration before deciding.
Match camera and display priorities to how you use a phone
Think about the shots you take and the screen you use every day. If you care about photography controls, video, zoom, screen size or outdoor visibility, identify which of those matters most and check the relevant features on the exact models. A general camera or display label cannot tell you which phone will suit your particular use, and a review’s subjective description is not a measurable result.

If you want a stylus or a particular accessory system, verify that the exact phone supports it in its official specifications. Before purchase, also check service access, repair options, warranty terms and published software-update commitments for your market. The sources cited here do not establish a directly comparable support-duration commitment for these two current flagship models, so do not assume one from the brand name alone.
Verdict: the winner depends on the question
Samsung led Apple in IDC’s worldwide smartphone shipment figures for Q2 2026; Apple led Samsung in Omdia’s figures for Q4 2025. Neither result determines the best phone for an individual buyer. Choose between the exact models available to you by operating-system fit, ecosystem, price and configuration, camera and display priorities, useful hardware features, and local support.
