To set up basic voicemail on most Samsung Galaxy phones, open the Phone app, touch and hold 1, then follow your carrier’s prompts. The carrier operates the mailbox, so its instructions determine details such as your PIN, greeting, and reset options. Visual voicemail is a separate interface and may require carrier, plan, and device support.
How do you set up voicemail on a Samsung phone?
- Open the Phone app. Use Samsung’s Phone app and open its keypad if it is not already displayed.
- Touch and hold 1. Samsung’s US support instructions identify this as the first-time setup route: Samsung Support: Set up voicemail.
- Follow the carrier’s prompts. Your carrier may ask you to initialize the mailbox, choose a PIN, record a greeting, or select other settings. The steps and requirements vary by carrier; there is no universal PIN rule or prompt sequence.
If holding 1 does not start setup, check your carrier’s instructions or voicemail app. Carrier app names and icons can vary.

How do you check voicemail after setup?
Use the voicemail shortcut in the Phone app if it is available, or call the voicemail system using your carrier’s instructions. For example, Verizon says its customers can dial *86 from their mobile device to hear and manage voicemail; check Verizon’s voicemail FAQ for the applicable guidance.
Basic voicemail and visual voicemail: what is the difference?
Basic voicemail
Basic voicemail is the carrier mailbox you reach by calling into its voicemail system. You listen to messages and manage them through the system’s prompts.

Visual voicemail
Visual voicemail displays messages in an app or phone interface, so you can select messages instead of navigating them only by listening in sequence. Its availability depends on the carrier, account, device, and software. The app may be provided by the carrier or appear within a phone app; Samsung notes that app names and icons vary by carrier.
Carrier-specific limits should not be treated as Android-wide rules. AT&T, for example, says its Visual Voicemail can store up to 40 messages for 30 days on its support page; that is an AT&T service limit, not a general Samsung or Android limit. Eligibility also matters: AT&T says Visual Voicemail requires a compatible Android smartphone and an AT&T Wireless or Prepaid voice plan that includes the feature. Why is visual voicemail missing?
- Check line and plan eligibility. Ask your carrier whether visual voicemail is available for your line and whether your plan includes it.
- Check device and software compatibility. A carrier may limit the feature to supported devices or software versions.
- Look for the carrier’s voicemail app. The interface may be separate from Samsung’s Phone app, and its name or placement can differ by carrier.
- Check for an app conflict. Google says that using a carrier voicemail app turns off visual voicemail in the Google Phone app to avoid a conflict. See Google Phone app voicemail guidance.
If voicemail will not activate, or you need to reset a PIN or change a greeting, use your carrier’s current instructions. Those mailbox settings are carrier-managed, so a single fix does not apply to every account.

What is Samsung Direct voicemail?
Samsung documents a separate feature called Direct voicemail. Samsung’s US support page says it is available only on Galaxy devices running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. The phone must be on and connected to the mobile network, and the feature does not work for video calls. It is not the universal setup path for ordinary carrier voicemail.
