If Samsung Voice Recorder will not record, saves no usable audio, or stops when the screen locks, start by checking permissions and input routing, then make the same short test recording in Voice Recorder and Camera. Comparing the two helps show whether the problem is limited to the app or affects the phone’s microphone more broadly. Settings and features vary by Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, and region; if a menu path differs, search Settings for the control name.
Start with the symptom

Fix permissions that block recording or saving
- Open Settings > Apps > Voice Recorder > Permissions.
- Allow Microphone so the app can capture sound. Android’s available choices depend on software version; they can include allowing access only while using the app, asking each time, or denying it.
- Check Music and audio access as well. Samsung lists this permission as necessary for saving recordings.
- Look for the phone-wide microphone access control in Settings and make sure it is not turned off. If the path differs, search Settings for “microphone access.”
- Reopen Voice Recorder and make a short test recording, then stop and play it back.

Find out whether the phone microphone or the app is at fault
- Disconnect wired headphones or microphones, turn Bluetooth off, and remove a case or accessory that could cover a microphone opening.
- Restart the phone.
- Record a short clip in Voice Recorder, then record a short clip in Camera and play each back.
If both recordings are silent, distorted, or unusually quiet, the issue may involve the phone’s microphone, a physical obstruction, or another system-level input problem. If Camera audio is clear but Voice Recorder is not, concentrate on Voice Recorder permissions, settings, and updates. Samsung recommends testing with Voice Recorder or Camera and checking whether accessories or downloaded apps are involved in its microphone troubleshooting guidance and regional microphone guidance.

If the phone has been exposed to moisture, gently pat the microphone area dry with a clean, soft cloth and let the device air-dry. Do not poke the opening or use compressed air. If audio remains poor after the phone is dry and accessories are removed, arrange support rather than trying to clear the opening with a tool.

Stop recordings from ending when the screen locks
Samsung UK documents background and battery settings as checks for Voice Recorder sessions that stop unexpectedly. Try the following where the options are available:
- Open Settings > Apps > Voice Recorder > Battery.
- Enable Allow background activity.
- In the phone’s battery settings, exclude Voice Recorder from battery optimization.
- Start a test recording and lock the screen to see whether it continues.

Check recording mode, quality, and input
Make sure your test uses the same mode and microphone input you normally use. Samsung Voice Recorder offers Standard/General and Interview modes on supported devices. Interview mode uses the phone’s top and bottom microphones and can show separate waveforms; it is not available on every model. A recording that sounds different in Interview mode may reflect how that mode uses the microphones rather than a failure to save audio.
Samsung UK also documents Low, Mid, and High recording-quality settings, stereo recording, call blocking during recording, and continuous playback. Availability depends on device and app version. Higher recording quality takes more storage, so a high-quality setting can leave less room for longer sessions. The Google Play listing says the app can use the built-in microphone, a Bluetooth headset, or a compatible external microphone; check exact phone and microphone compatibility before relying on an accessory.

Update the app and check for downloaded-app conflicts
- Install any available Galaxy software update and Voice Recorder update.
- If the problem persists, start the phone in Safe mode. Samsung says Safe mode disables downloaded apps.
- Make the same short recording test in Safe mode.
- If it works in Safe mode, restart normally, remove recently installed apps one at a time, and retest after each removal.
A successful Safe mode test points toward a downloaded-app conflict; it does not identify which app is responsible. Samsung explains microphone troubleshooting and Safe mode in its support guide.

If the built-in microphone continues to perform poorly in both Voice Recorder and Camera after accessories are disconnected and the phone is restarted, contact Samsung Support or arrange service. Samsung also recommends reporting unusual behavior through the Samsung Members app.

A factory reset should come only after simpler checks and support options. It erases device data: Samsung’s reset guidance warns, “All your data will be erased.” Back up important information before considering a reset, and do not treat it as a routine first troubleshooting step.
