Samsung’s built-in video player on Galaxy phones and tablets supports AVI, FLV, MKV, MP4, 3GP, WebM, and TS according to Samsung’s US support guidance. That list does not guarantee that every file in those containers will play: the video’s encoding and the device’s software can also matter. If a video fails, check its format, update the relevant app, and then consider clearing that app’s cache or data.
What is Samsung Video Player?
Samsung Video Player refers here to the video playback experience available on Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung’s support guidance covers file compatibility and basic troubleshooting; it is not a complete feature list or a model-by-model chart. Player controls and menus may differ by device and software version, so verify a control on your own Galaxy device rather than assuming it is available everywhere.

Which video formats does it support?
Samsung’s US support page lists these formats as natively supported on Galaxy devices:

Format names usually describe a container, not every detail of how the video inside it was encoded. A file can use one of the listed containers and still fail because of its particular codec or other file characteristics, or because support differs on the device. Samsung says an unsupported format may need to be converted. Check Samsung’s Galaxy file-recognition and loading troubleshooting guidance for its compatibility advice.

What to try when a video will not play
- Check the file format. Compare the file’s format with Samsung’s supported list above. If it uses an unsupported format, conversion may be needed.
- Update the relevant app. Samsung recommends updating the app involved. The exact app and update path can depend on the device and software version.
- Clear the app cache. Find the affected app in your device’s settings and use the available storage or app-maintenance controls. Menu labels and paths vary across Galaxy models and software versions; consult the instructions for your device if you cannot find the control.
- Consider clearing app data only after checking the consequences. Samsung includes clearing data among its suggestions, but doing so can remove local app data. Check the app- and device-specific guidance before proceeding, especially if you need to preserve locally stored information.
If the file uses a listed format and still will not load after these steps, the format name alone cannot establish the cause. The file’s encoding, the app, and the particular device or software version may all be relevant.
Built-in player or another video app?
Samsung’s support page does not establish that the built-in player offers any particular advanced control on every Galaxy model. Galaxy Store listings describe features for their own third-party apps; those claims should not be treated as Samsung Video Player features.
