If your Samsung phone shows “Upload Mode,” don’t assume it is Odin or Download Mode, and don’t start flashing firmware. A 2018 technical study of selected Samsung Exynos devices lists upload and ODIN/download as separate boot modes. The exact model and the full wording on your screen determine the safest next step.
What does Upload Mode mean on a Samsung phone?
“Upload Mode” is a boot-state label, but the available evidence does not establish one universal meaning or behavior for every Samsung device. In a 2018 analysis of selected Samsung Exynos devices, G. Alendal and co-authors describe a bootloader setting called REBOOT_MODE that signals which boot mode to use. Their examples include normal boot (0), ODIN/download mode (1), upload mode (2), and recovery mode (4). These are technical values from the devices studied, not a consumer guide to every Galaxy model. Read the paper, “Forensics acquisition — Analysis and circumvention of Samsung secure boot enforced Common Criteria mode”.

Because the study lists upload and ODIN/download separately, the terms should not be treated as interchangeable. It describes ODIN mode as a firmware-update mode on the studied devices; that does not mean a screen containing “Upload Mode” is asking you to install firmware.
What should you check on the screen?
Before trying a button combination or connecting a cable, note the full message and identify the phone model and hardware variant if available. A plain “Upload Mode” label is not the same screen context as one that says “CP Crash” or explicitly instructs you to connect a USB cable.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
- Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
- Exact wording: Record all text, including any error label or instruction.
- Model: Samsung support information is organized by Galaxy model, and the technical study covers selected Exynos devices rather than every Samsung variant.
- How it appeared: Note whether it happened during a reboot or update, or while you were using the phone normally.
- What happened next: Check whether the device returned to normal or whether the screen reappeared.
What to do when Upload Mode appears
- Read the complete on-screen instruction. Follow a USB-cable instruction only if it appears on your exact screen. A Galaxy M33 5G owner reported seeing “CP Crash / Upload Mode” with a “Connect USB cable to reboot” prompt, but that individual report does not establish a fix for other devices.
- Don’t flash firmware based on the label alone. The technical paper distinguishes upload from ODIN/download mode, and the evidence does not support treating every Upload Mode screen as a firmware-flashing prompt.
- Look up support for the exact model. Samsung’s support model page lists the question “Galaxy S10 series: UPLOAD MODE is suddenly shown during use?” The page’s troubleshooting instructions are not established here, so use Samsung’s current, model-specific guidance rather than assuming another model’s steps apply. Samsung Support
- Contact Samsung support if the screen recurs or will not clear. A Galaxy F62 community thread describes repeated Upload Mode appearances; in that incident, Samsung support advised a service-center inspection. That was case-specific advice, but a recurring or unresolved screen warrants model-specific support rather than guesswork.
Why there is no universal button sequence
The sources establish distinct boot-mode entries on selected devices and document different model-specific incidents; they do not establish a single cause or exit-button sequence for all Samsung phones. The Galaxy S10 support listing confirms that Samsung has addressed an Upload Mode symptom for that series, but its linked FAQ instructions are not available here. Community reports are anecdotal, and the 2018 study is not exhaustive documentation for current Samsung models.
