Use Smart DNS only if your provider currently supports the service you want and you do not need an encrypted VPN connection for the TV. If you want the TV’s network traffic routed through a VPN, set up the VPN on a compatible router and connect the TV to it. The two approaches do different jobs, and neither guarantees access to a particular streaming app or catalog.
Smart DNS and a VPN router do different things
Smart DNS changes the DNS settings used by the TV. A provider may use this to support access to particular services, but changing DNS does not create an encrypted VPN tunnel for the TV’s traffic.

A VPN router runs a VPN connection at the router and routes the TV’s connection through it. The effect depends on the router’s configuration; if other devices share that VPN route, their traffic may also use it.

Which option should you choose?
Choose Smart DNS if you need DNS-based service support
Use it only after checking that the provider currently supports the exact streaming service you want. Compatibility can change. For example, CyberGhost’s Samsung Smart TV instructions state that its Smart DNS is no longer compatible with streaming services, while it can still be used for general DNS purposes. That is a limitation of CyberGhost’s product, not evidence that all Smart DNS services have the same limitation.

Choose a VPN router if the TV should use a VPN
Check that the router supports a VPN client, not just VPN passthrough, and that its firmware works with your VPN provider. If only the TV should use the VPN, look for device-level routing controls. Consider whether the router can handle the household’s traffic at the performance you need. Provider guides from NordVPN and Namecheap describe configuring a router and then connecting the TV to it; check each provider’s current instructions before setup.
Set a manual DNS address on a Samsung TV
Samsung’s US support instructions give this path, though menu names and placement vary by model and software version:

- Open All Settings.
- Choose Connection → Network → Network Status.
- Open IP Settings.
- Set DNS Setting to Enter Manually.
- Enter the DNS server address supplied by your provider, then save the setting. Follow the provider’s account or device authorization instructions, and restart the TV if the provider requires it.
Some models place Network under General settings. Samsung also notes that menu paths vary by model; see its network troubleshooting guidance. Samsung’s example DNS address, 8.8.8.8, is a troubleshooting example—not a Smart DNS provider address. For a Smart DNS service, use the address supplied by that provider.

Share a computer’s VPN connection
Provider guides describe sharing a VPN connection from a Windows PC over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. This avoids changing the router, but the TV depends on the computer and its shared connection being available and correctly configured. See the current instructions from NordVPN or Namecheap; these are provider-described options, not a universal procedure for every PC or TV.

Use an external streaming device
A streaming device that supports a VPN app is another route: playback runs through that device rather than through a VPN app on the Samsung TV. Windscribe lists a streaming stick as an option in its Samsung TV guidance. Confirm that the device, app, provider, and streaming service meet your needs.

- Confirm current support for the exact VPN or Smart DNS provider, streaming service, and region; a generic setup guide cannot guarantee that a specific app or catalog will work.
- For a router VPN, verify VPN-client support, firmware and provider compatibility, routing controls, and expected performance for your household.
- For Smart DNS, obtain the address and any authorization steps directly from the provider. Do not assume that a public DNS address is a Smart DNS service.
Samsung documents internet connections over Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet in its Singapore network setup guide; the guide also cautions that screenshots and menu labels can differ by model and software.
