Samsung TVs can use infrared (IR), Bluetooth, or a mix of both to communicate with a remote. A classic IR remote needs a clear path to the TV’s receiver; a paired Bluetooth Smart Remote usually does not need to be pointed directly at the set. Some Smart Remotes also use IR for selected commands, so the exact behavior depends on the remote and TV model.
How IR and Bluetooth differ

Why a Samsung Smart Remote may use both
“Smart Remote” does not identify one universal connection scheme. In a model-specific 2014 UK Smart Control guide, Samsung says every button except Power uses Bluetooth, while Power uses IR. Samsung Canada describes a different fallback behavior for applicable remotes: some volume and channel commands may still work over IR after Bluetooth disconnects, while Voice and other smart features require reconnecting Bluetooth. Pair a supported Bluetooth Smart Remote
- Point the remote toward the TV.
- Press and hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds.
- Wait for the on-screen pairing confirmation.
This is Samsung’s current guidance for supported Smart Remotes, not a universal sequence. Button combinations and steps differ across generations and regions, so use the instructions for your TV model if this does not work. Troubleshoot by what still works
Voice or smart features fail, but some buttons work
On a remote with IR fallback, Bluetooth may have disconnected while volume or channel commands continue over IR. Re-pair the remote using the steps for your model to restore Bluetooth-dependent features such as Voice. Samsung Canada’s remote LED guide

A classic remote works only when aimed at the TV
That is consistent with IR operation. Make sure nothing blocks the path between the remote and the TV’s receiver, and check the television manual to locate the receiver rather than assuming it is in the same place on every set. The remote gives no response
- Check the batteries or, for a rechargeable remote, its charge state.
- If it is a Bluetooth Smart Remote, check whether pairing is needed.
- If it is an IR remote, confirm the path to the TV’s receiver is clear.
- Consider a remote, receiver, or compatibility problem if those checks do not help; Samsung lists battery, pairing, and sensor issues among possible causes. Samsung remote troubleshooting
Check whether a remote emits IR
Samsung suggests pointing a digital camera at the front of the remote and pressing a button; a visible flash can indicate an IR signal. Camera behavior varies, and seeing a flash does not establish that the TV’s receiver works or that the remote’s command is compatible with the TV. Samsung remote troubleshooting

Do not confuse the remote link with control of other devices
Samsung’s Universal Remote feature is for compatible equipment connected via HDMI. An external device controlled by IR may need to be within line of sight of the TV’s IR sensor. HDMI-CEC, called Anynet+ by Samsung, is another control route; it is not the Bluetooth link between a Smart Remote and the TV. Samsung Universal Remote guidance
Choose a replacement for the exact TV
If a remote is lost, damaged, or incompatible, check the TV’s model code and market before buying a replacement. Samsung notes that button layouts and features vary by device and country, so a remote that looks similar may not provide the same functions. Samsung Smart Remote pairing guidance

For a compatible SolarCell remote, Samsung says a USB-C mobile charging cable can be used to charge it. This applies to supported rechargeable remotes; it is not a fix for an IR line-of-sight or Bluetooth pairing issue. Samsung Canada’s remote LED guide
