For a closer look at individual files, open My Files and use Analyze storage to find large, duplicate, or unused items. The exact labels and locations can vary by tablet model and software version.
Check the storage breakdown first
- Open Settings, then tap Device care and Storage.
- Review the used and available storage amounts and the categories shown on the screen.
- Open My Files. Check folders and categories such as Downloads, Images, Videos, Audio, and Documents. Use Analyze storage if it appears, then inspect any large or duplicate-file suggestions before deleting anything.
This identifies what is using space on your tablet; it does not mean the largest category is the same on every device. Samsung says menus and settings can differ by model and software.

What “Other” means on a Samsung tablet
Samsung’s UK guidance describes “Other” as app-related data that does not fit its named categories, including system files, cached data, and temporary files. It is a storage category, not necessarily one file, and Samsung says it cannot be deleted directly. Some of its contents may be reduced by clearing cache or app data, but those actions have different consequences.
Choose a cleanup method that fits the files
| Method | What it does | Effect on app data | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete selected files in My Files | Removes files from the tablet | Does not reset an app, though deleting a file an app needs can affect your access to it | Open and verify each candidate before deleting |
| Clear an app’s cache | Removes temporary app files | Different from clearing data; cache clearing is intended for temporary files | Use the app’s Storage screen in Settings |
| Clear an app’s data | Resets the app to its factory-default settings | Can remove personal settings and saved app data | Use only if you understand what that app stores and are prepared to set it up again |
| Move personal files to external storage | Relocates files such as photos, videos, music, or downloads | Does not generally expand internal space available for apps | Confirm the tablet supports the storage device and verify the moved files are accessible |
Clear cache without accidentally resetting an app
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app you want to review, then tap Storage.
- Choose Clear cache to remove temporary files, if that option is available.
Clear data is a separate, more consequential control: Samsung says it resets the app and removes personal app settings or data. The available options and steps can differ by app and software version; some system apps do not allow data clearing.

Move files to a microSD card or USB storage
MicroSD cards
Not all Galaxy tablets support microSD cards, so check the specifications for your exact model before buying or inserting one. Samsung says Android devices do not support Adoptable storage: a card should not be treated as a way to merge its capacity with internal storage. On supported devices, My Files can move or copy personal files to an inserted card. Moving an app is a separate matter: some developers do not permit it, and Samsung’s instructions indicate that the app’s Storage screen must show a Change option for that move to be available.
USB and cloud storage
Samsung describes USB storage as an external location available through My Files when a storage device is connected, but support depends on the model. My Files materials also list cloud locations such as Samsung Cloud and Google Drive. Moving files to an external location or backing them up is not the same as expanding internal app storage. Do not assume cloud syncing frees local space; check the service’s behavior and your sync settings, then confirm the local copy has been removed if your goal is to reclaim space.

If storage still looks full
- Return to Settings > Device care > Storage and check whether the category totals changed after cleanup.
- In My Files, review Downloads and media folders for files you recognize and no longer need. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system or app files simply because they appear large.
- For a large app, inspect its Storage screen before choosing cache or data controls. Clear data only when you accept the reset and possible loss of saved app information.
- If a card or USB device is not available in My Files, confirm that the precise tablet model supports it and that the device is connected in a supported way.
Without the tablet’s model and its actual Storage screen, it is not possible to say which category is using the most space on that particular device.
