If your Samsung Galaxy tablet won’t switch between portrait and landscape, first check that Auto rotate is on in Quick settings. If rotation still fails, test more than one app, turn the tablet without touching the display, then update and restart it. Menu labels and placement can differ by model and software version.
1. Turn on Auto rotate in Quick settings
Swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen to open Quick settings. Find the orientation control; it may be labeled Auto rotate, Portrait, or Landscape. If Portrait or Landscape is active, tap the control until Auto rotate is selected. Close Quick settings, then turn the tablet sideways without touching the display.

Auto rotate follows how you hold the tablet. Portrait locks the screen upright, while Landscape locks it sideways. Samsung’s instructions are general Galaxy guidance, and the exact layout may vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s guide to screen rotation controls.

2. Restore the rotation control if it is missing
The control may have been removed from the Quick settings panel. On Samsung’s US guide, you can restore it from the panel’s edit screen:

- Open Quick settings by swiping down from the top-right edge.
- Tap Edit (the pencil icon).
- Find Auto rotate in the available controls and add it to the panel.
- Tap Done to save, then check that Auto rotate is enabled.
If the labels or edit controls differ, consult Samsung support for your tablet model and software version.
3. Check whether the app or screen supports rotation
Try rotating the tablet in another app. Some apps are designed to stay in portrait or landscape, and some screens do not support every orientation, including upside-down rotation. If only one app refuses to rotate, the behavior may be specific to that app or screen rather than a tablet-wide problem. Samsung describes these limitations in its screen rotation guidance.

4. Test rotation without touching the display
With Auto rotate on, open an app that supports both portrait and landscape. Turn the tablet sideways with no finger resting on the screen while it changes orientation. Samsung says the device uses an internal accelerometer to determine how it is held, and advises avoiding contact with the display during this test because touching it can interfere as the screen begins to rotate. This sensor explanation describes how rotation works; it does not establish that a particular tablet has a defective sensor.
5. Update the software and restart
- Open Settings and check for Software update.
- Install any available update, following the on-screen instructions.
- Restart the tablet, then test Auto rotate again in more than one suitable app.
The exact Settings path and restart controls vary across Galaxy models and software versions. Samsung lists updating and restarting among its troubleshooting steps: Screen does not rotate on Galaxy phone or tablet.

6. If rotation still fails across apps
Check the tablet for signs of physical damage. If Auto rotate is enabled and the problem persists across apps that support both orientations after an update and restart, contact Samsung Support about service. Symptoms alone are not enough to confirm a hardware fault.
Samsung also lists factory reset as a later troubleshooting option, but a reset removes personal information. Back up your data before considering it, and use Samsung’s model-specific instructions if you decide to proceed.
