Samsung advertises sequential reads of up to 2,000 MB/s, but that is a manufacturer maximum—not a speed every computer or workload will reach. Check your device’s port before paying for the extra performance.
What the Samsung T9 offers
Samsung sells the T9 in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Its official specifications list sequential read speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s. Maximum sequential write speeds vary by capacity: up to 1,950 MB/s for the 1TB and 2TB models, and up to 2,000 MB/s for the 4TB model. These are Samsung’s published claims, not independent test results. Samsung’s U.S. product page and its 2023 product announcement provide the specifications.

The drive uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, a 20Gbps interface. Samsung also lists AES 256-bit hardware encryption, drop resistance up to 3 meters, and a five-year limited warranty. Treat the drop-resistance figure as a manufacturer claim, not a promise that the drive will survive every fall or impact; warranty coverage is subject to its terms.

Only if the host connection supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and the workload is suitable. A USB port or cable with a lower maximum bandwidth can bottleneck transfers, so the T9’s advertised 2,000 MB/s read figure should not be assumed for every setup. Samsung lists Windows, macOS, and Android compatibility, but compatibility does not mean every device will deliver the maximum speed.

Is the T9 worth choosing over the T7?
The T9 is most compelling when your computer supports its faster interface and you regularly move large files. If your host cannot use USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, or your transfers are modest, the extra interface headroom may not matter much. TechRadar reports that the T9 came close to the theoretical limits of its interface in its benchmark suite and identifies the T7 as an alternative for buyers who do not need the T9’s speed. That testing and recommendation are TechRadar’s, not independent testing conducted for this article. Read TechRadar’s T9 review and its portable SSD buying guide.

Who should buy the Samsung T9?
- Consider it if your host supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and you want a portable SSD with high advertised sequential speeds, hardware encryption, and a manufacturer-listed five-year limited warranty.
- Consider a lower-speed option such as the T7 if you do not need the T9’s speed or your device cannot take advantage of its interface.
- Check before ordering if you plan to use it with a camera, console, phone, or TV, since device-specific storage and format support can vary.
