Samsung SM-N950F is the international Galaxy Note8. It combines a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display, 6 GB RAM, dual 12 MP rear cameras, a 3,300 mAh battery, microSD expansion, IP68-rated protection and an integrated S Pen. Samsung’s latest listed firmware for this model is Android 9 Pie, with a May 1, 2021 security patch, so its 2026 limitations matter as much as its original specifications.

What the SM-N950F model number means
“SM-N950” identifies the Galaxy Note8 hardware family. The F suffix denotes an international/regional configuration rather than the U.S. carrier models. The model must be checked in Settings → About phone → Model number; a listing that only says “Galaxy Note8” is not enough to establish its processor, LTE bands, SIM tray or firmware.

The SM-N950F/DS support page covers the dual-SIM family, while the single-SIM support page covers another regional SKU.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully Unlocked: Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.), both domestically and internationally.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charger and charging cable that may be generic.
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Model | What it generally represents |
|---|---|
| SM-N950F | International Note8 configuration; SIM arrangement and bands depend on the exact regional SKU |
| SM-N950F/DS | Dual-SIM international variant; the second SIM may share a hybrid slot with microSD |
| SM-N950U | U.S. carrier-oriented Note8 model |
| SM-N950U1 | U.S. unlocked-oriented model |
| SM-N9500 | Hong Kong/China Snapdragon-oriented variant |
Display and S Pen
The 6.3-inch panel is a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display measuring 2960 × 1440 at 521 ppi. Samsung shipped the phone with Full HD+ as the default resolution; Quad HD+ can be selected in the display settings. Resolution choice affects sharpness and power use, but it does not change the panel’s native specification.
The integrated S Pen is the Note8’s defining feature. It supports screen-off memos, handwritten notes, pressure-sensitive drawing, Smart Select, screen annotation and, where supported by the installed software and region, translation and text extraction. Replacement pens should be specifically compatible with the Note8 silo; a newer Note or Galaxy S Ultra pen is not automatically interchangeable or feature-equivalent.
Processor, memory and storage
The international SM-N950F configuration is commonly identified with Samsung’s Exynos 8895 10 nm platform. Samsung’s own material lists alternative processor clock arrangements and says the application processor can vary by market, so that identification should not be applied to every Note8 model. All listed SM-N950F specifications include 6 GB of RAM.

Internal storage was sold in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB tiers depending on market. Samsung’s launch specification lists microSD support up to 256 GB. A dual-SIM or hybrid tray may require choosing between a second Nano-SIM and a microSD card; “dual-SIM plus expandable storage” is not universal.
Camera specifications
Rear cameras
- 12 MP wide-angle camera, f/1.7 aperture, Dual Pixel autofocus and optical image stabilization.
- 12 MP telephoto camera, f/2.4 aperture, autofocus and optical image stabilization.
- 2× optical zoom and up to 10× digital zoom.
Front camera
The front camera is an 8 MP autofocus unit with an f/1.7 aperture. Samsung’s product material also lists an iris scanner beside the front-camera system.
The hardware provides a genuine telephoto lens and stabilization, but present-day results depend on lighting, lens condition, camera-app version, battery and thermal condition, and whether original Samsung firmware is installed. The specifications do not establish a current image-quality ranking.

- See more, scroll less. Do more on the go with Galaxy Note8 beautifully spacious 6.3-inch QHD Super AMOLED infinity display-the possibilities are endless.
- Say it your way. Write texts, crop photos and create animated GIFs with Samsung’s most advanced S Pen to date. Notes, memos and reminders can even be written on the spot without unlocking your phone.
- Shoot like a pro. Snap professional-quality photos anyone would be proud to share with the world’s first dual camera with optical image stabilization on both lenses.
- Conquer the elements. Worry less about daily wear and tear as the Samsung Galaxy Note8 is both dust- and water-resistant, backed by an IP68 rating.*
- More power to you. The Galaxy Note8 long-lasting battery keeps you powered for those busy days, the fast wireless charger or lightning-fast USB Type-C charger has you ready to go in no time.
Battery and charging
The rated battery capacity is 3,300 mAh and is not user-removable. The phone supports wired fast charging and wireless charging under WPC and PMA standards. Charging speed depends on the charger, cable, alignment and device condition; no particular charging time should be assumed.
That rating describes a new or nominal battery, not the remaining capacity of a used phone. Before buying, check for rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns, heat while charging, a lifted screen or back panel, and a loose USB-C port. A battery replacement can compromise the phone’s water-resistance seals.
Software and Android update status
Launch software
The SM-N950F launched with Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Samsung later provided Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9 Pie updates.
Latest entry shown by Samsung
As of August 18, 2026, Samsung’s SM-N950F update page lists build N950FXXUGDZC1, released April 16, 2026, on Android 9 Pie with a May 1, 2021 security patch level (official update page). The 2026 firmware date does not mean the phone runs a modern Android release or receives current security fixes.
Android 9 can still handle calls, messaging, web browsing, media, navigation, photography, documents and S Pen tasks. However, newer applications may require later Android APIs, while banking, workplace and government apps can impose security requirements the phone cannot meet. App compatibility changes over time, and unofficial ROMs are not equivalent to Samsung-supported software.
Network compatibility and U.S. warnings
SM-N950F supports LTE Cat. 16, not 5G. Samsung states that network details vary by market and operator. LTE band overlap alone does not guarantee voice service: a carrier may also require approved VoLTE provisioning, Wi-Fi Calling support, IMEI acceptance and compatible regional firmware.
Rank #3
- The Galaxy Note20 features a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with Full HD+ resolution and HDR10+ support, offering bright, vibrant colors and sharp detail, making it perfect for productivity, streaming, and gaming.
U.S. buyers should confirm all of the following with the intended carrier before paying:
- LTE bands and 4G fallback behavior.
- VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling certification.
- IMEI acceptance and whether the device is carrier-unlocked.
- Region or CSC restrictions and the seller’s firmware country.
- Whether the carrier still permits voice service on this model.
Do not assume an “unlocked” international SM-N950F will work on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or an MVNO. Carrier approval is separate from the retail description.
Durability and age-related risks
Samsung rates the phone and S Pen IP68 for controlled submersion in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. This is not a waterproof guarantee. Salt water, chlorinated water, soaps, pressure, drops, repairs and aging can compromise seals; an opened or repaired used phone should be treated as having uncertain water resistance.
Inspect a used unit for OLED burn-in, tinting, dead pixels, touch defects, charging-port wear, damaged S Pen detection, corrosion and a swollen battery. These conditions are device-specific and cannot be inferred from the original specification sheet.
Is the SM-N950F still worth buying in 2026?
It can make sense as an inexpensive secondary phone, offline media player, note-taking device or S Pen handset when the battery, screen and network compatibility are verified. Its large AMOLED display, stylus, microSD support and dual-camera hardware remain useful.
It is a poor choice for security-sensitive primary use, modern gaming, guaranteed U.S. carrier service, 5G, or long-term app compatibility. Compare the complete cost of the phone, battery or repair work and accessories with a newer used Galaxy Note or Galaxy S Ultra.
Quick Recap
Used-buying checklist
- Open Settings → About phone and confirm the full model number, including any “/DS” suffix.
- Check the actual internal storage; “up to 256 GB” describes a market tier, not every handset.
- Confirm the SIM tray arrangement and whether two SIMs can be used with a microSD card.
- Record the Android version, build number and security-patch date.
- Test the display on white, gray and dark screens for burn-in and dead areas.
- Test every camera, autofocus, optical zoom, fingerprint reader, iris scanner, speaker, microphone, USB-C port, wireless charging and S Pen function.
- Ask about battery health, swelling, previous repairs and water exposure.
- Provide the IMEI to the intended carrier and obtain confirmation of VoLTE and service eligibility.
- Confirm that the correct Note8-compatible S Pen is included if it matters to the purchase.
