Samsung S10 Force Shutdown: Restart a Frozen Phone Safely

Hold the Galaxy S10’s Power/Side key and Volume Down together to restart a frozen phone. For a responsive phone, use the on-screen Power off option.

If your Samsung Galaxy S10 is frozen, press and hold the Power/Side key and Volume Down together until the phone restarts. This is a forced restart—not a command that guarantees the phone will stay off. If the phone responds normally and you want it off, use the on-screen power menu and tap Power off.

Force-restart a frozen Galaxy S10

  1. Press and hold the Power/Side key and Volume Down at the same time.
  2. Keep holding until the screen turns off and the phone begins restarting, or the Samsung logo appears. Samsung says to hold the keys for more than seven seconds in its UK instructions; its power troubleshooting guidance says a restart can take up to 60 seconds. Timing can vary, so keep holding until the restart is evident rather than relying on one exact duration. Samsung UK’s restart instructions and Samsung Canada’s power troubleshooting steps give that guidance.
  3. Once the phone returns to the home screen, the forced restart is complete.

Samsung describes this as a force reboot or soft reset. It is not a factory reset and does not, by itself, erase your personal data. Samsung’s general Galaxy instructions note that key locations and screens can vary by model, software version, and market, so labels may differ slightly on an S10 variant.

Turn off a responsive phone instead

If the screen still responds and you simply want to power down, open the on-screen power menu and choose Power off. The button combination above is for restarting an unresponsive device; it should not be treated as a way to leave the phone switched off.

If the S10 freezes again or will not turn on

Check software and storage

If freezing recurs, check for available software updates and review the phone’s storage and memory. Samsung includes these checks in its frozen Galaxy device guidance.

Use Safe mode to check for app trouble

Safe mode can help identify whether a third-party app is contributing to the problem. If the phone behaves normally in Safe mode, consider whether a recently installed app is involved.

Reserve factory reset for later

A factory reset is a separate troubleshooting step, not part of the forced-restart button hold. It erases personal data; back up your data before resetting. If charging and basic power steps do not restore the phone, Samsung’s Canada guidance recommends requesting service. That page applies to devices sold in Canada; service routes may differ elsewhere.
