To pair most Samsung Smart Remotes with a TV, turn the TV on, point the remote at its sensor, and hold Return/Back and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds. Wait for the on-screen confirmation. If you want the remote to control a cable box, streaming player, or another device instead, use the TV’s Universal Remote setup; that is a separate process.
Pair or reconnect a Samsung Smart Remote
- Turn on the TV and point the remote toward its remote-control sensor. Samsung says the sensor is commonly on the lower right or bottom center, but placement varies by model.
- Press and hold Return/Back and Play/Pause at the same time for at least three seconds.
- Wait for the TV to confirm that pairing or syncing is complete, then test a basic function such as Home or volume.
Samsung says Smart Remotes are designed to connect automatically, so this button combination is mainly for manual pairing or reconnection. The TV and remote may use different button labels or procedures depending on model and region; consult the Samsung instructions for connecting a Smart Remote or the manual for your exact TV if the prompt does not appear.

Check which kind of remote you have
A slim Samsung Smart Remote with fewer buttons is a useful clue that it may use Bluetooth. Samsung describes these remotes as able to work without a direct line of sight. A traditional infrared remote usually has more buttons, requires an unobstructed path to the TV sensor, and does not need Bluetooth pairing. These are identification clues, not guarantees for every model; Samsung’s guide to Smart and traditional remotes can help distinguish the types.

- If it is an infrared remote: check the batteries and clear the path to the TV sensor. Bluetooth pairing is not the fix for an infrared remote.
- If it is a Smart Remote: use the TV’s on-screen prompts and model manual if its buttons do not match the standard Return/Back and Play/Pause combination.
Set up the remote to control an external device
Pairing a Smart Remote to the TV does not by itself register a cable box, disc player, streaming device, or game system. For a supported device, turn it on and use the TV’s Universal Remote feature. One Samsung regional guide gives this route: Home > Connected Devices > Setup > Start, then select the device type and follow the prompts. Menu paths also vary by model year in Samsung Australia’s guidance: 2023–2025 models use Connected Devices > Universal Remote; 2022 models use Menu > Connected Devices > Universal Remote; and 2016–2021 models use Home > Source > Universal Remote. These are regional examples rather than a universal menu map. See Samsung Australia’s setup paths and use the path available on your own TV.
Not every external device supports Samsung’s Universal Remote feature. Device placement or obstacles can also affect signal transmission and control, as Samsung notes in its setup guidance and regional troubleshooting information.

For an HDMI-connected streaming device
Some compatible streaming devices can be controlled through HDMI automatically. If yours is not responding, Samsung’s US guidance says to enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) in External Device Manager. On older TVs, the setting may instead be under System or Expert Settings. The menu and available controls depend on the TV, device, and connection. Programming a third-party universal remote depends on its manufacturer, so follow that remote’s own instructions and verify it supports your TV model. Samsung also documents Bluetooth game-controller pairing through the TV’s device settings, with different procedures for PS4, PS5, and Xbox controllers; its guidance says Nintendo Switch cannot control TV functions. Check Samsung’s controller compatibility and pairing instructions for the specific controller.

Troubleshoot pairing problems
- Confirm that the TV is on, aim the remote at its sensor, and retry the pairing sequence for at least three seconds.
- Check that the remote has charge or working batteries. If it is an infrared model, make sure nothing blocks the path to the sensor.
- Verify the remote type and button labels against the TV’s exact manual. A mismatch may mean the standard Smart Remote pairing procedure does not apply.
- On Smart Remote models covered by Samsung Canada’s guide, two LED blinks indicate a disconnected Bluetooth link. That interpretation is model- and guide-specific, not a universal signal for every Samsung remote. See Samsung Canada’s pairing guidance.
If the remote is lost or needs replacing
Samsung lists replacement options for lost remotes, but the right replacement depends on the exact TV model and whether it uses a Smart Remote or infrared remote. Check the TV manual and Samsung’s remote connection and replacement guidance before choosing one. If a replacement has different buttons, follow its instructions or the manual rather than assuming the original pairing combination applies.
