After you install a new water filter, reset the refrigerator’s filter reminder. On many Samsung models, press and hold Filter Reset for three seconds; other models use a different button, a button combination, or a Family Hub touchscreen menu. The exact route depends on the refrigerator model, so use its manual if the controls below do not match your panel.
Reset the filter light using your refrigerator’s control type
Samsung describes the filter indicator as a six-month timer. Reset it after installing a new filter so the reminder starts a new cycle; resetting does not replace a filter that is due for service. Samsung recommends replacing the filter every six months, while noting that water quality and dispenser use can affect replacement timing. Standard control-panel buttons
- Find a button marked Filter Reset or a secondary label that indicates filter reset.
- Press and hold the indicated control for three seconds. On many models, the light turns off or changes when the reset succeeds.
- If there is no Filter Reset button, check the manual for your exact model. Samsung Canada says that some models assign the function to Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water; some require two buttons.
Button labels and sequences vary. Do not try arbitrary combinations if the documented control does not match your panel. Samsung’s Canada guide explains the alternate controls and directs owners to model-specific instructions.

Family Hub touchscreen
On Family Hub models, use Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset. Samsung Canada’s instructions add a Proceed confirmation. Menu wording can differ by region or software version, so consult the manual if these options are not shown. See Samsung US Support and Samsung Canada Support.

Legacy RF4289 and RSG309 touchscreen models
Samsung Canada gives a distinct route for the RF4289 and RSG309: open Settings, select Water Filter, advance to page 4/4, press and hold Reset the water filter until the status changes, then save. These steps are specific to those models; do not apply them to other touchscreen refrigerators. Refer to Samsung Canada’s model instructions.
If the filter light stays on after a reset
- Check cartridge installation. Make sure the filter is inserted fully and locked in place. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide identifies incorrect installation as a possible cause of problems. Samsung Canada Support
- Verify the reset method. Identify the refrigerator’s exact model and use its manual to confirm the correct button or menu path. Samsung’s published instructions vary by control panel and model; there is no single sequence that applies to every refrigerator. Samsung Canada Support
- Check for an alert on a refrigerator without a water filter. Samsung UK says some RS70F, RS80F, and RS90F refrigerators manufactured before July 2025 may show a filter alert despite having no filter. - Address slow flow or unusual taste after replacement. Check that the cartridge is fully locked, then dispense more water to flush trapped air or carbon particles, as Samsung Canada advises. Follow the flushing directions for your refrigerator and region. Samsung Canada Support
Choose a compatible replacement filter
Filter compatibility depends on the refrigerator. Samsung’s US replacement guide names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1; it advises checking the number printed on the installed cartridge. Confirm the replacement against your refrigerator’s model number or manual rather than assuming one cartridge fits all Samsung refrigerators. Flush the water system after changing the filter
Dispense and discard water after installation as directed for your refrigerator. Samsung’s regional instructions differ: the US guide calls for several gallons for its specified cartridge process, Samsung Canada describes about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses, and Samsung Australia gives about 3 L for one internal-filter procedure. These figures describe different procedures and are not interchangeable. Use the amount in your model’s manual or the applicable regional support instructions: Samsung US, Samsung Canada, and Samsung Australia.
