On many Samsung refrigerators, press and hold Filter Reset for about three seconds, then check that the filter indicator changes. The exact control or menu depends on the model: some use a secondary button function, two buttons together, or a touchscreen. Reset the reminder after replacing the filter—not as a substitute for replacing an overdue filter.
Before resetting, check the filter
Samsung describes the filter indicator as a timer-based replacement reminder. Samsung Canada says it typically turns on after about six months; that is a reminder interval, not a guarantee that every filter will last exactly six months in every household. Follow the replacement guidance for your refrigerator and filter, and check water flow as well. Samsung advises comparing flow with the filter installed and removed: if flow is noticeably slower with the filter installed, replace it even if the light is off. After installing the correct replacement filter for your refrigerator model, reset the indicator so its reminder cycle restarts. The light alone does not establish whether the filter is causing a water-flow problem.
Reset the filter light using the control your model has
Physical Filter Reset button
- Locate the button labeled Filter Reset on the refrigerator’s control panel.
- Press and hold it for about three seconds.
- Check that the light, color, or filter status changes. Samsung U.S. gives this three-second hold for standard models.
Secondary-function or Ice Type / Filter Change button
On some models, the reset function is assigned to another button rather than a button labeled Filter Reset. Samsung UK gives Ice Type / Filter Change as a three-second hold for applicable models. Use that instruction only if it matches your refrigerator’s controls; button assignments vary by model. See Samsung UK’s filter-change guidance.

Arrow-button controls
For models with arrow navigation, Samsung U.S. provides a route through More Options to Filter Reset. Select the control shown on your refrigerator and follow the on-screen prompt; this path is an example for applicable models, not a universal sequence.
Family Hub touchscreen
Samsung U.S. lists this Family Hub path: Apps > Fridge Manager > Fridge Settings > Water Filter > Reset. Menu names or availability can differ across refrigerator models and software interfaces.

Named older models RF4289 and RSG309
Samsung U.S. lists Settings > Water Filter for these models, then says to hold Reset until the status changes. Treat this as model-specific guidance, not instructions for every Samsung refrigerator.
If the indicator does not reset
- Check the model-specific control. Some refrigerators assign reset to a secondary function, require two buttons held together, or use an on-screen menu. Samsung Canada notes these variations. Consult the user manual for your exact model if the controls do not match the examples above.
- Confirm that the status changed. Look for the indicator light, color, or filter status to update after the hold or menu action.
- Do not assume a reset fixes slow water flow. The indicator is a reminder, and a reset only changes that reminder status. If flow is noticeably slower with the filter installed than with it removed, replace the filter.
- Use the exact model’s manual if the light remains on. The general Samsung instructions do not establish one reset sequence or a universal fix for every model, nor do they establish that a persistent indicator means the control panel is defective.
