No—Samsung’s guidance does not identify Power saving mode as a cause of battery damage. It is a built-in feature designed to extend use between charges by reducing background activity and, depending on your Galaxy model and settings, limiting selected functions. The tradeoff is that performance may decrease and some apps may update or notify you less promptly.
What Power saving mode changes
Power saving mode prioritizes longer runtime before your next charge. Samsung says it does this by limiting certain features and reducing background activity. Which restrictions apply depends on the device, software version, region, and options enabled.

Samsung lists examples that can include turning off Always On Display, limiting CPU speed or screen brightness, disabling 5G, restricting apps, and limiting background access to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Location services may also be limited. These are possible controls, not a universal checklist for every Galaxy phone.

What you might notice while it is on
The documented downside is functional rather than battery damage. Samsung warns that app and device performance can be affected, tasks may take longer to complete or update, and background apps may not receive updates or send notifications while Power saving mode is active. The actual effect depends on the restrictions enabled and how a particular app works.
If an app you rely on is late with notifications or updates, review the active Power saving options and the app’s background permissions. You can turn the mode off or adjust restrictions when timely background activity matters more than extending runtime. Battery runtime is not battery lifespan
Power saving mode is meant to help the phone last longer before the next charge. Battery lifespan is a separate issue: Samsung UK says that keeping a battery at 100% for a long period can reduce its lifespan and discusses Battery protection as a charging control. That guidance concerns charging behavior, not the Power saving toggle.

Samsung’s UK battery-care guidance treats Battery protection separately. The Galaxy S23 series manual likewise lists Power saving and Protect battery as distinct settings; this is a model-specific example, not proof that every Galaxy has identical menus or controls.

How to use it without disrupting important apps
- Open your phone’s Battery settings and turn on Power saving mode when you need more runtime. The precise menu path and available controls vary by Galaxy model, software, and region; consult Samsung’s support page for your country if the labels differ.
- Check whether your phone offers additional Power saving options, such as limits on background data, display features, performance, or apps. Enable only the restrictions that fit your needs.
- If a needed app stops updating or notifying you promptly, review its background access and the Power saving settings. Turn the mode off or relax the relevant restriction when timely alerts are more important.
- When you no longer need the extra runtime, switch Power saving mode off from Battery settings. The feature is reversible.
Samsung’s Galaxy battery optimization guidance explains that background apps can be restricted from Wi-Fi and mobile data and that location services may also be limited. Exact behavior depends on the active options and device.
Can you leave it on all the time?
The available Samsung guidance does not say that leaving Power saving mode on damages the battery. You can keep it enabled if its restrictions suit your use, but expect possible performance changes and less timely background updates or notifications. If those effects interfere with everyday use, turn it off or adjust the available options.
