If only a small partition is visible, unlock the drive with its password in Samsung Portable SSD software or Magician. If you can see files but cannot change them, check the file system and follow the Samsung steps for exFAT or the operating-system steps for NTFS. Do not format or reset the SSD as a first test: either can erase data.
Identify the kind of write protection
Look at what appears in File Explorer or Finder. When Samsung security mode is enabled and the drive is still locked, the full SSD capacity is hidden. Samsung’s T7 User Manual says the accessible security partition is about 128 MB until you unlock the drive. Samsung’s support guidance also directs users to unlock the SSD when only restricted capacity appears.

If the drive mounts at its expected capacity and you can read files but not save or edit them, investigate the format and how the SSD was used across operating systems. That symptom alone does not show that Samsung security mode is enabled.

If only a small partition or capacity appears, unlock the SSD
- Connect the SSD and open Samsung Portable SSD software or Magician.
- Enter the correct password and choose UNLOCK.
- Check whether the full drive capacity is now available.
The T7 manual says security mode requires the password and an unlock each time the drive is connected. If you have forgotten the password and the data matters, stop before attempting a reset. Samsung says there is no password recovery option; its factory-reset service erases all user data. Contact Samsung support for guidance rather than using reset as a routine fix.

If the drive mounts but you cannot write to it
Check exFAT after using the SSD on multiple operating systems
Samsung documents a case where writing to an exFAT volume can become locked after the SSD has been used across operating systems. Its T7 User Manual and T7 Shield User Manual give these recovery checks:
- Mac: Reconnect the T7, then eject it using the normal Eject action.
- Windows: If Windows prompts you, choose Scan and fix. If it does not, select the drive, open Properties > Tools > Check, and run Check Disk (CHKDSK).
Back up important files before making changes to a volume. These are Samsung’s documented checks for the described exFAT issue, not a universal fix for every read-only SSD.

On Mac, check whether the SSD is formatted as NTFS
macOS can read NTFS storage but does not write to it natively, according to Apple’s external-storage guidance. Check the SSD’s format before treating this as a Samsung lock or drive failure. Samsung says its Portable SSDs are formatted as exFAT for Windows and macOS compatibility; see its Portable SSD FAQ.

Reformatting may make a volume usable with a different file system, but it erases data. Copy off any files you need before considering it; do not use formatting as a diagnostic step.

If the SSD is still not recognized or remains read-only
- Check that the cable and connection are secure, then try another USB port.
- Consult the manual for the exact SSD model and operating system.
- If the drive is correctly connected but still is not recognized or cannot be written to, contact an authorized Samsung service center through Samsung support.
The documented steps do not establish one safe command that clears a persistent device-level read-only state across every Samsung model and operating system. Avoid assuming that DiskPart or a format will fix it, especially if the drive contains files you need.
