If you forgot your Samsung phone’s pattern, first check whether you changed it within the past 72 hours. On supported Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later, Samsung may let you unlock the phone with the previous pattern. If that option is unavailable, Samsung’s documented fallback is to erase and reset the device—which deletes local data that has not been backed up.
Can you recover access without losing data?
Possibly. Samsung’s previous-screen-lock feature is the only data-preserving recovery route described in its support guidance. It applies only to supported Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later, within 72 hours of changing the pattern, and only if you remember the previous pattern. - After at least five failed unlock attempts, check for the Forgot pattern option. Samsung says the recovery prompt appears after five or more failed attempts; the exact wording can vary with the lock type.
- Choose the option and enter the previous pattern when prompted.
- Set a new pattern, PIN, or password.
Samsung says the previous lock method can be used once per lock type. Its India guidance says three incorrect entries of the previous method end further attempts. Avoid guessing repeatedly; consult Samsung India’s forgotten-lock guidance for the regional details.
When does a factory reset become necessary?
If your phone does not support previous-lock recovery, more than 72 hours have passed, or you cannot remember the prior pattern, Samsung’s documented alternative is erasing the device. A factory reset deletes personal data stored locally on the phone. Files and messages that were not backed up may be lost. Samsung describes the result plainly: “Factory resetting your phone restores it to its factory default settings and deletes all personal data stored on the device.” See Samsung’s factory-reset instructions.

Before proceeding, consider whether you can still back up anything and confirm that you know the Google and Samsung account credentials associated with the phone. Samsung’s reset guidance explains the data loss and the possible account checks that follow.
Can Samsung Find erase the phone remotely?
Samsung Find or SmartThings Find may offer an Erase data option, depending on the device, account, and settings. This erases the phone; it does not reveal or remove the pattern while preserving local data. Samsung’s instructions require the phone to be on and connected to a stable network for the described functions, a Samsung account on the device, and remote controls enabled. Samsung India also notes that an offline device may be erased when it next comes online.

Review Samsung’s instructions for remotely unlocking or erasing a device and its India forgotten-pattern guidance. Check the requirements before relying on remote erase; if the phone cannot connect or the necessary settings were not enabled, the option may not work.
What happens after the reset?
Android’s Factory Reset Protection may ask you to verify a Google account previously registered on the phone during setup. Depending on how the reset is performed, Samsung account credentials may also be required. These checks verify ownership; a reset is not a way around them. If you cannot complete verification or setup, contact Samsung Support or an authorized service center. Have the phone’s model information available, and use Samsung’s instructions for that specific model rather than assuming a button sequence applies to every Galaxy.

Samsung says screens and menu labels can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s support guidance does not establish one Recovery-mode key combination for every Galaxy phone, so do not follow a sequence intended for a different model. Identify your exact model and consult Samsung’s matching reset instructions, such as Samsung UK’s Galaxy factory-reset guide. If you are unsure which reset path applies, ask Samsung Support or an authorized service center before erasing the device.
