Samsung OLED gaming settings to change for lower input lag and smoother motion

Enable Game Mode, configure the correct HDMI input, verify VRR in the Game Bar, and treat Game Motion Plus as an optional smoothness feature that can add input lag.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For the most responsive controls on a Samsung OLED, start by enabling Game Mode (or verified Auto Game Mode) on the HDMI input used by your console or PC. Configure Input Signal Plus for that port when you need HDR or a higher-bandwidth signal, turn on a supported VRR mode, and leave Game Motion Plus off until you decide that smoother interpolation is worth additional processing delay.

The exact menu names, port capabilities and available features differ by model, region and software version. The workflow below applies the principles documented by Samsung and the model-specific guidance available for the S95C and S90D, but you should confirm the final path in your television’s manual.

What to change first

These settings address different problems, so changing every option indiscriminately can make troubleshooting harder. Use this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Game Mode: reduces video processing intended for movies and television, which is Samsung’s primary low-latency setting.
  2. Input Signal Plus: configures the selected HDMI input for an expanded signal range and is commonly required for HDR from an external device. It is not a control-lag switch.
  3. VRR: synchronizes the display refresh with a compatible console or PC to reduce tearing and uneven motion.
  4. Game Motion Plus: optional interpolation for lower-frame-rate games. It can look smoother, but increasing blur or judder processing can increase input lag.

After each change, open the TV’s Game Bar and check the reported input, resolution, HDR and VRR status. Samsung describes these as status indicators rather than universally calibrated latency measurements.

Enable Game Mode for the gaming input

Samsung says Game Mode reduces input lag by optimizing picture processing for real-time play. The S95C and S90D settings guides from RTINGS likewise recommend Game Mode for their lowest measured input-lag configuration. Some televisions switch it on automatically when a compatible console is detected; automatic detection can fail if the source, cable or HDMI port is not recognized correctly.

Automatic versus manual activation

Look in the TV’s settings for a section named Game Mode, Game Mode Settings or External Device Manager. Depending on the model, you may see an Auto option that activates Game Mode when the input identifies a game console. If you do not see a game status in the Game Bar, select Game Mode manually for the HDMI input you are using. Samsung menu paths vary between model years and regional software, so treat any single path as an example rather than a universal route.

Confirm that it is really active

  • Switch the TV to the exact HDMI input connected to the console or PC.
  • Open the Game Bar using the remote shortcut documented for your model.
  • Check that the bar identifies the source as a game input and reports the expected resolution and refresh rate.
  • If the TV remains in a standard picture mode, recheck Auto detection or enable Game Mode manually.

Game Mode does not make a slow game engine faster; it removes or shortens display-side processing. A game running at 30 frames per second can still feel less immediate than one running at 60 or 120 fps even when both use Game Mode.

Set Input Signal Plus on the correct HDMI port

Input Signal Plus expands the HDMI signal range for the selected port. Samsung says to select the HDMI connector attached to the console, and its older televisions may label the same function HDMI UHD Color (the older name is used on 2018 and earlier models). RTINGS reports that Input Signal Plus is usually needed for HDR from external devices on its S95C and S90D test televisions.

How to configure it

  1. Connect the console or PC to the HDMI port you intend to use for gaming.
  2. Open the television’s external-device or connection settings.
  3. Find Input Signal Plus (or HDMI UHD Color on an older model).
  4. Enable it for that specific HDMI port, not for an unrelated input.
  5. Reopen the console’s video settings and select HDR or the desired high-resolution, high-refresh output.

This option is about signal compatibility and HDR recognition. It should not be described as a latency-reduction toggle. If enabling it causes a blank screen, flicker or an unsupported-signal warning, return to the previous setting and verify that the source, port and cable support the selected resolution and refresh rate.

Use VRR when the entire signal chain supports it

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets the panel adjust its refresh timing to the game’s changing frame rate. That can reduce tearing and make uneven frame delivery look less jarring. Samsung documents VRR as dependent on a compatible TV model, HDMI connection and source device. The S95C and S90D guides list FreeSync, HDMI Forum VRR and G-SYNC-compatible VRR support, with VRR enabled automatically in Game Mode on those tested models.

Check all three components

  • TV: confirm that your exact model and HDMI port support the VRR format you plan to use.
  • Source: enable VRR, FreeSync or a compatible setting in the console or PC graphics driver.
  • Game: some titles have their own frame-rate or VRR switch, and a title capped below the display’s range may not benefit in the same way.

Samsung’s Game Bar can show whether VRR is active and can display a real-time FPS value. Use that readout after launching the game; do not assume VRR is working merely because the television supports it. Samsung’s Australian guidance notes that Game Bar availability is limited to selected 2021–2025 models and that its layout changes with model and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When VRR appears unavailable

  1. Confirm the console or PC is connected directly to a VRR-capable HDMI port rather than through a device that does not pass VRR.
  2. Check that the source output is within the TV’s supported VRR resolution and refresh range.
  3. Enable Game Mode, then restart the game or power-cycle the source so it renegotiates the HDMI features.
  4. Inspect the Game Bar for a VRR status change. If it remains unavailable, consult the exact model manual before changing unrelated picture controls.

Game Motion Plus: smoother motion with a latency tradeoff

Game Motion Plus is Samsung’s motion-interpolation option for games. Samsung describes it as useful for a softer, clearer picture in some dynamic role-playing and adventure games. RTINGS characterizes it as low-latency interpolation for lower-frame-rate games: Blur Reduction targets higher frame rates, while Judder Reduction targets lower frame rates.

Interpolation requires additional processing. A Samsung product guide states that when Game Motion Plus is off, the game operates with minimum input lag, and that increasing Blur Reduction or Judder Reduction increases input lag. The wording comes from a guide mirrored by a third-party host, and its exact model applicability is not established; use your own model’s manual as the final authority.

Choose based on the type of play

Priority Recommended starting point What to expect
Competitive shooters, fighting games, rhythm games Game Motion Plus off Lowest processing delay; motion may look less polished at low frame rates.
Single-player RPG or adventure games Try Game Motion Plus with modest values Softer, clearer movement, with possible added delay or interpolation artifacts.
Mixed library Keep it off by default and create a per-game habit Switch it on only when visual smoothness matters more than immediate response.

Do not treat Game Motion Plus as a free frame-rate increase. If you see halos, duplicate edges, shimmering objects or a delayed response, reduce both controls or disable the feature. Test it with the same game and camera movement you normally play; a setting that looks good in a slow exploration scene may feel wrong during a fast turn.

PC gaming: use the tested S95C and S90D guidance carefully

For the S95C and S90D, RTINGS recommends PC mode for proper 4:4:4 chroma, which keeps small computer text and fine interface edges clearer. It also says Game Mode must remain enabled in PC mode for low input lag. These are model-specific findings, not a blanket rule for every Samsung OLED.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical PC setup

  1. Rename or identify the HDMI input as a PC if your model offers that option.
  2. Enable PC mode when you need 4:4:4 chroma for text and desktop work.
  3. Enable Game Mode as well; PC mode by itself is not the low-latency switch.
  4. Set the operating system and graphics driver to the TV’s supported resolution and refresh rate.
  5. Verify HDR and VRR status in the Game Bar after starting a game.

RTINGS notes an S95C text-clarity caveat related to that model’s unusual subpixel structure. If desktop text looks fringed or less clean than expected, compare PC mode with the model’s recommended input label and scaling settings rather than assuming a general OLED limitation.

Use the Game Bar as a verification checklist

Samsung’s Game Bar can expose input-lag status, resolution, FPS, HDR state and VRR state. Its appearance and available fields vary by model and software version. Treat the information as the television’s current status, not as a laboratory measurement that can be compared across every Samsung model.

  • Input: confirms that you are adjusting the port actually carrying the game signal.
  • Resolution and refresh rate: reveal whether the source negotiated the output you intended.
  • HDR: confirms that the HDR handshake succeeded after Input Signal Plus was configured.
  • VRR: confirms whether variable refresh is active rather than merely supported in theory.
  • FPS: helps explain why a game may still look uneven when the panel itself is running at a high refresh rate.

A complete setup sequence

Use this procedure when installing a console or PC for the first time, or after changing cables and HDMI ports.

  1. Connect directly: attach the source to a compatible HDMI port with a cable rated for the resolution and refresh rate you want. A replacement cable is relevant only if the current cable or port cannot carry that signal; replacing a working cable does not inherently lower input lag.
  2. Select the input: switch the TV to that HDMI port before changing settings.
  3. Enable Input Signal Plus: turn it on for the selected port if HDR or the intended high-bandwidth mode requires it.
  4. Enable Game Mode: choose Auto only if detection works, otherwise select Game Mode manually.
  5. Configure the source: set the console or PC to a supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode and VRR mode.
  6. Verify with Game Bar: check the negotiated resolution, FPS, HDR and VRR state.
  7. Decide on Game Motion Plus: leave it off for competitive play; test low values for slower games where visual smoothness is the priority.
  8. Save per-input or per-game preferences: if your model supports separate picture settings, keep a responsive profile and a motion-smoothing profile instead of changing one setting repeatedly.

Troubleshooting common symptoms

Controls still feel delayed

  • Confirm Game Mode is active on the current input, not just enabled on another HDMI port.
  • Turn Game Motion Plus off and retest before changing other picture controls.
  • Check the game’s own frame-rate mode and the source’s output refresh rate.
  • Test the controller on the source device; wireless-controller delay is separate from TV processing.

HDR is missing or looks wrong

  • Enable Input Signal Plus for the port connected to the console or PC.
  • Verify that the source, HDMI port and cable support the selected HDR resolution and refresh rate.
  • Recheck the Game Bar after restarting the game so the HDMI handshake is renewed.

VRR will not activate

  • Confirm support on the exact TV model, HDMI port and source device.
  • Enable VRR in the console or PC settings and in the game when a separate switch exists.
  • Use Game Mode and inspect the Game Bar rather than relying on a menu checkbox alone.

Motion looks worse with interpolation

Lower Blur Reduction and Judder Reduction, then retest a scene with rapid camera movement. If halos, judder or delayed controls remain, switch Game Motion Plus off. Different games expose interpolation errors differently, so judge the setting in the titles you actually play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model, region and software differences

Samsung’s support pages are regional, and labels and menu paths can change between software releases. The Australian Game Bar documentation specifically warns that layouts differ and limits the feature to selected 2021–2025 televisions. A setting documented for an S95C or S90D should not be assumed to exist, or to behave identically, on another OLED generation.

Before changing an option, note the complete model number, software version and region shown in the TV’s support or about screen. Then check the corresponding user guide for HDMI bandwidth, VRR formats, Game Bar availability and the current path to Game Mode Settings. This prevents a missing menu from being mistaken for a faulty console or cable.

Recommended profiles by priority

Use case Game Mode Input Signal Plus VRR Game Motion Plus
Lowest possible control delay On On when required for the signal or HDR On if the complete chain supports it Off
Smooth single-player motion On On when required On if supported Test modest Blur/Judder values and watch for artifacts
PC desktop plus gaming On Configure for the PC HDMI port On if supported by the GPU and TV Usually off for clear text and direct response

The most reliable low-lag baseline is therefore simple: Game Mode on, the correct HDMI signal configuration, VRR verified rather than assumed, and Game Motion Plus off unless its visual benefit is worth its processing cost for a particular game.
