NFC is the short-range wireless connection that lets a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone or watch communicate with a contactless payment reader. To pay, enable NFC, select Samsung Pay in Samsung Wallet as the contactless payment service, choose a card, authenticate, and hold the device near the reader. Your model, software, card issuer, and the merchant’s reader all affect whether the payment will work.
What NFC does on a Samsung Galaxy
Samsung defines NFC on Galaxy devices as short-range wireless communication used for features including Samsung Wallet payments, transportation cards, and data transfer between nearby devices. For a store payment, the phone or watch communicates with a compatible contactless reader. NFC is the connection method; Samsung Wallet is the app that presents the selected payment card.

Samsung’s US support instructions use the name Samsung Pay for the contactless payment option, accessed through Samsung Wallet. Menu names and availability can differ by Galaxy model, region, carrier, and software version.
Set up NFC payments on a Galaxy phone

Open Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment, then turn NFC on. Samsung notes that the labels or menu location may vary by model and software version. Samsung’s NFC and contactless payment instructions

Open Contactless payments and choose Samsung Pay. Enabling NFC and selecting the default contactless payment service are separate steps.

Open Samsung Wallet and add or select an eligible payment card. If you cannot add a card, Samsung advises checking with the card issuer because eligibility can depend on the issuer. Samsung Wallet card support guidance

Pay at a contactless reader

Open Samsung Wallet, select the card you want to use, and authenticate using an available fingerprint or Wallet PIN option.

Hold the back of the phone close to the reader’s contactless area and follow any prompts on the phone or terminal. Samsung notes that a thick phone case may need to be removed. Samsung’s instructions for using Samsung Wallet in stores

If you are paying with a supported Galaxy watch, bring the watch close to the reader and follow the watch’s payment prompts. Samsung provides Galaxy watch payment guidance.
What must be compatible
A successful payment depends on the device, payment card, and reader—not just on NFC being switched on.

- Payment card: The issuer must allow the card to be added and used with Samsung Wallet. Ask the issuer about an unsupported card.
- Reader: The merchant’s reader must accept the contactless payment method. Samsung says Wallet will not work with card readers that do not support NFC or MST. Samsung Wallet reader compatibility guidance
- Region and software: Payment availability and settings can vary by country, device, and software version. The setup path above reflects Samsung’s US guidance, not a guarantee of availability everywhere.
If a Samsung NFC payment does not work
Work through the likely causes in order, testing the payment again after each relevant change.

Check that NFC is on under Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment, and confirm Samsung Pay is selected under Contactless payments.

In Samsung Wallet, verify that you selected the intended card and completed authentication. If the card cannot be added or is declined consistently, contact the issuer to confirm eligibility.

Move the phone closer to the reader’s contactless area and follow the terminal’s prompts. A reader without NFC or MST support cannot accept Samsung Wallet through this method.

Remove a thick case or accessory and retry. Samsung warns that some non-genuine covers—particularly ones containing magnets, cards, or metal—may interfere with NFC. Samsung guidance on NFC interference and troubleshooting

If the menu is missing or behaves differently, check the instructions for your exact Galaxy model and software version; Samsung’s labels and feature availability are not universal.
Samsung’s description of Wallet payment security
Samsung says a Wallet payment sends the merchant a token and describes fingerprint or Wallet PIN authentication before payment information is sent to the terminal. This is Samsung’s description of its own service, not an independent security assessment. Samsung Wallet security and payment guidance
