Samsung says the app has been discontinued in the U.S. and recommends Google Messages for affected users; its notice exempts devices running Android 11 or lower. Outside the U.S., check Samsung’s local guidance. If the app is still supported where you live, work through updates, permissions, app data, and Safe mode before considering a reset.
Why does Samsung Messages keep closing?
There is no single confirmed cause for every Samsung Messages crash. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance points to several possibilities: an app or device software issue, compatibility or permission problems, interference from a downloaded app, or a broader device issue. A crash by itself does not prove that the phone has a hardware fault.

In the United States, discontinuation is a separate possibility: Samsung says Samsung Messages has been discontinued there and directs affected users to Google Messages. The notice does not apply to devices running Android 11 or lower. An app that closes unexpectedly and an app that is no longer supported are different problems, so check service status before repeatedly resetting it.
Try the lower-risk checks first
Restart and install available updates
- Restart your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Check for Samsung Messages updates in the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store, if the app is available there on your device.
- Check for a device software update in Settings. Menu labels and locations can differ by model and software version.
Samsung recommends checking app updates and compatibility; Google also recommends keeping Android and apps updated. An update check is a sensible first step, but it is not a guarantee that an update exists or will resolve this particular crash. Review Samsung Messages permissions
Open Settings > Apps > Samsung Messages > Permissions. Check whether the permissions needed for the features you use are allowed. Permission needs depend on the feature, and Samsung notes that Android may automatically remove permissions from apps that have not been used for a while.
Clear cache or data only with the consequences in mind
Clearing cache and clearing app data are not the same action. Google says clearing cached data can temporarily free space, and that cached data builds up again. Clearing data is a more consequential reset: Samsung warns, “Deleting your app’s data will erase any data stored by the app and may log you out of the app. Backup any important information before clearing data.” Protect information you need before proceeding.

- For Samsung’s documented data-reset path, open Settings > Apps > Samsung Messages > Storage.
- Choose Clear data only after reviewing Samsung’s warning and backing up important information.
- Reopen the app and check whether the closing behavior changes.

Check system software and device health
Samsung notes that many apps rely on Google Play system software. On supported devices, check Settings > About phone/tablet > Software information > Google Play system update. Then, if your device offers it, run Settings > Device care > Optimize now and restart. These paths and options may vary by model and software version.

Google also says Android phones can begin having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. This is general Android guidance, not evidence that low storage caused Samsung Messages to crash on your device. Google’s Android Help explains its storage and app troubleshooting guidance.
Use Safe mode to test for downloaded-app interference
Samsung says some downloaded apps can make a Galaxy device freeze, crash, or lag. Safe mode starts the device with its original software and disables downloaded apps, making it useful as a diagnostic check.

- If Messages no longer closes in Safe mode: a downloaded app is a plausible source of the interference. Remove recently installed apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal.
- If Messages still closes in Safe mode: this test does not point to a downloaded app as the cause. Continue with supported app and device troubleshooting rather than assuming the test proves a hardware fault.
Follow Samsung’s device-specific instructions for entering and leaving Safe mode, since the procedure can vary. Its Galaxy app troubleshooting guide describes the diagnostic approach.
Reinstall only if the option is available; reserve factory reset for last
Some Samsung apps come preinstalled and cannot be uninstalled. Depending on the device, you may see options such as uninstall updates or disable instead. Reinstallation also depends on whether Samsung Messages remains available in your app store and market.

A factory data reset erases device data and settings. Treat it as a last resort, after backing up the device and exhausting less destructive checks. Samsung cautions that a reset may not permanently solve a problem if an app still needs a future update. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance covers these options.
In the U.S., check whether Samsung Messages has been discontinued
Samsung’s U.S. End of Service notice says, “The Samsung Messages application has been discontinued.” Samsung states that users on Android 11 or lower are not affected by that notice; it applies to the U.S. market only. If you are elsewhere, verify the status for your country rather than assuming the U.S. notice applies.
For affected U.S. users, Samsung recommends Google Messages as the default messaging app. Its published switch steps are:

- Choose Set default SMS app.
- Select Google Messages.
- Tap Set as default.
Samsung says conversations transfer automatically after switching. Transfer time depends on the amount of data and may take up to approximately 24 hours. Samsung also flags continuity considerations: older Tizen watches launched before Galaxy Watch4 will not show the full conversation history in Google Messages, though they can still read and send texts; Message Continuity for Samsung Messages is disrupted after discontinuation; and switching apps on Samsung devices released before 2022 may temporarily interrupt ongoing RCS conversations, while SMS/MMS remain available. For the cross-platform RCS experience Samsung describes, all chat members need RCS enabled; Android users need Google Messages, and iOS users need iOS 18 or later. Samsung also says that starting in Fall 2026, Samsung Messages will become removable by users on devices running One UI 9.0 or higher. That is a future rollout detail, not a general explanation for current crashes; check Samsung’s current support information for availability on your device.
