To use voice-to-text on a Galaxy phone or tablet, choose a voice-input provider in Samsung Keyboard settings, then tap the keyboard’s microphone while a text field is open. Samsung’s menus and microphone placement can vary by model and software version.
Choose a voice-input provider
- Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default. Make sure Samsung Keyboard is selected as the default keyboard if you plan to use Samsung voice input. Samsung’s keyboard settings guide and voice-control instructions describe these options.
- Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input, then choose Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing. Samsung states that its voice input is available only when using Samsung Keyboard.
The settings provide two documented choices, but the available options may depend on your device configuration. Samsung’s published setup guidance does not establish which provider is more accurate, faster, or better for privacy, so choose based on the option you have and the language support you need.

Set the language, including offline options
Check the voice-input language settings if dictation does not recognize the language you intend to speak. Samsung’s setup instructions describe enabling an offline language or downloading an offline language pack; availability can vary by configuration. Dictate into a text field
- Open an app and tap a field where you can enter text, such as a message or note, so Samsung Keyboard appears.
- Tap the keyboard’s microphone icon. On first use, you may be asked to accept terms or grant permissions.
- Wait until the microphone is active, then speak. Tap the microphone again or use the on-screen control to stop or pause; the exact control depends on the device interface.
If the microphone or setting is missing
- Confirm Samsung Keyboard is selected under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default if you are trying to use Samsung voice input.
- Look in Samsung Keyboard settings for Voice input and verify that a provider is selected.
- Check the keyboard toolbar or its settings if the microphone is not visible. Its placement and the available controls differ across models and software versions.
- If the menu labels do not match, search Settings for “Samsung Keyboard.” Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and region; its Canadian keyboard-settings guide, last updated March 28, 2026, also cautions that screens may vary.
