To enable automatic word completion or replacement, return to Samsung Keyboard settings, tap Auto replace, and turn on the relevant option. On some software versions, this control may be grouped under Smart typing.

You can also reach the keyboard settings while typing: open Samsung Keyboard, tap its Settings icon, then open Predictive text. Samsung documents older menu routes such as Settings > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing and Settings > Language and input > Samsung Keyboard > Predictive text. The current and older paths may differ by device and software version. Samsung Support’s instructions for predictive text and auto-correct cover these routes.
What the Samsung Keyboard correction settings do
“Autocorrect” can mean several different behaviors. Samsung separates them into settings, so turning on suggestions does not necessarily make every correction automatic.

Predictive text: displays word suggestions as you type. Tap a suggestion to add it to your message.

Auto replace: completes or replaces the word you are typing with a likely choice. Samsung says the highlighted word can be inserted with the spacebar or Enter key.

Auto spell check: underlines misspelled words and offers corrections.

Suggest text corrections: a separate option described in Samsung Canada’s keyboard guidance for spelling and grammar suggestions, with app-level management.

If Predictive text or Auto replace is missing

Check which keyboard is active. These instructions apply to Samsung Keyboard. If you use a third-party keyboard, its settings and steps differ.

Look under Smart typing. Depending on the software version, Auto replace and related controls may be grouped there rather than shown as top-level settings.

Account for software and regional differences. Menu labels and available options vary across devices, operating-system versions, and regions. Samsung warns that some options may not be available on older devices or operating systems.
Remove unwanted learned suggestions
Remove one word
When an unwanted learned word appears in the suggestion bar, press and hold it, then choose Remove.
Clear personalized predictions
Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings, then choose Erase personalized predictions. The exact button wording can vary by software version and locale. Samsung’s keyboard guidance also describes text shortcuts, which let you set a short trigger that brings up an expanded phrase in the suggestion bar.
A documented exception for Japanese input on Android 16
Samsung Japan says Japanese predictive text cannot be switched on or off on Android 16 and later. The Japanese option remains visible in settings but cannot be toggled; Samsung distinguishes this behavior from Android 15 and earlier. This is specific to Japanese input in Samsung Japan’s guidance, not a general Android 16 restriction for every language or region. Samsung Japan’s Japanese predictive-text guidance was last updated September 17, 2026.
Galaxy tablets and external keyboards
On Galaxy tablets, keyboard settings can vary by carrier and software version. Samsung treats a Book Cover Keyboard as a separate accessory; it is not required to change Samsung Keyboard predictive-text settings. See Samsung’s Galaxy tablet keyboard guide for tablet-specific guidance.
