To install an app from outside the Play Store or Galaxy Store on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Settings, search for Install unknown apps, select the app that will start the installation, and enable its permission. This permission applies to that source app—not to every app or download on the phone. Only proceed when you trust the source and the specific file.
Find the Install unknown apps setting
- Open Settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap the Settings search field and search for Install unknown apps.

Allow the app that will start the installation
Choose the source app you plan to use—for example, Chrome if you downloaded an APK in Chrome—and turn on its Allow from this source switch. The exact switch wording can vary. You must grant permission to the app that launches the installation; allowing Chrome does not automatically allow another browser or file manager.

Continue only when you trust the app and its source
Return to the browser, file manager, or other app you selected and open the downloaded APK to continue. Samsung recommends installing apps through the Play Store or Galaxy Store. An app obtained elsewhere may put your phone and personal data at risk, so verify both the source and the file before proceeding. Samsung’s Security and privacy guide

If Android offers to have Google inspect the app, keep security checks enabled when possible. A warning or block may signal a genuine risk rather than a step to dismiss automatically. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide
If the setting is missing or installation is blocked
Check Auto Blocker
Samsung says Auto Blocker can block apps from unauthorized sources and may disable the Install unknown apps menu. First confirm that the app and download are legitimate. Turning Auto Blocker off reduces a protection, so do so only if you understand that trade-off and still intend to install the file. Confirm you selected the right source app
If permission is enabled but the installation remains blocked, check that you allowed the same app that is opening the APK. For instance, a download opened from a file manager may require permission for that file manager even if Chrome already has permission.
Do not treat a security warning as a routine obstacle
If the phone or Google warns about the file, stop and reassess its origin rather than disabling protections just to complete the install.
