A Samsung ice maker that keeps frosting up is usually letting warm, moist air into the compartment, or is being affected by airflow or freezer settings. First identify where the ice is: accessible frost on the bucket or freezer surface can be cleared carefully, but a sheet of ice over the ice maker itself is a service issue. Samsung’s US guidance says not to manually defrost a frozen-over ice maker.
First identify where the frost is

Samsung says frost forms when warm, moist air enters and freezes. If accessible frost returns after you correct possible air leaks and clear the area, contact Samsung support for service.

Check for gaps that let warm air in
Make sure the door closes and seals properly
Look for food or containers stopping the refrigerator or freezer door from closing fully. Samsung suggests placing a flashlight inside the compartment and closing the door to help spot gaps. Check the rubber seal around the door: wash dirt away with warm, soapy water and dry it. If the seal has pulled out of its channel, press it back into place; a torn or split seal needs service.

Seat the ice bucket against the chute
Check that the ice bucket is installed flush against the ice chute. A gap can let warm air reach the ice-making area. Samsung’s guidance says the gasket should sit flush against the bucket.

Check the dispenser flap
Look at the black flap inside the ice chute. It should sit flush against its housing. Ice, frost, or debris can hold it open and admit warm air. Samsung advises clearing ice around the chute with warm water if needed, then drying the bucket thoroughly so leftover moisture does not freeze again. See Samsung’s dispenser guidance.
Keep the vents clear
Samsung recommends leaving two inches of space in front of the vents at the back of the compartment. Move food away from the vents so cold air can circulate. If frost has already formed on a vent, moving food alone may not restore airflow; clear the accessible frost safely first.

Check whether the freezer is set too cold
Check the freezer temperature setting and turn off Power Freeze if it is active. Power Freeze makes the freezer as cold as possible and may stay on for up to 72 hours on some models. Samsung also says the refrigerator’s surrounding environment should be above 50°F; a refrigerator installed in a colder space may overcool. Controls differ by model, so use the instructions for your refrigerator. Samsung’s overcooling guidance covers these checks.

Remove only accessible frost
- For light frost on an accessible surface, wipe it with a damp cloth.
- For heavier patches, gently use a plastic scraper.
- Wipe the area and dry it with a second cloth.
Samsung warns: “Do not use a hair dryer to speed defrosting. This will damage the refrigerator.” These instructions apply to accessible frost, not to an ice maker covered by a sheet of ice.

- The ice maker itself is frozen over with a sheet of ice.
- Frost returns after you have checked the door seals, bucket alignment, dispenser flap, vent clearance, and freezer setting.
- A door seal is torn or split, or the ice maker’s automatic defrost function does not clear a frozen-over unit.
