Whether you can leave a group chat on a Samsung phone depends on the messaging app and chat type. Samsung Messages does not let you remove yourself from a group chat created by someone else. In Google Messages, a Leave group option may appear for some RCS group conversations, but it is not available in every chat.
First, check which messaging app has the chat
Open the conversation and identify whether it is in Samsung Messages or Google Messages. The app matters because their group-chat controls differ. Samsung’s instructions for Samsung Messages apply to devices running Android 11 or older; Samsung says the app is being discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer starting July 6, 2026. See Samsung’s group-text instructions and its Samsung Messages discontinuation guidance for current device details.

How to look for Leave group in Google Messages
- Open the group conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then tap Details.
- Look for Leave group. If it appears, select it and follow any confirmation prompt.
A Samsung Members moderator described this option for qualifying RCS groups, where RCS is active and all participants use RCS-compatible messaging apps. The guidance does not establish that every RCS group, mixed-platform conversation, or device will show the control. See the Samsung Members moderator response.
Why Leave group may be missing
Samsung’s group-text support describes SMS/MMS group messaging, while the Samsung Members guidance ties Google Messages’ leave control to RCS conditions. A missing option does not by itself reveal whether the cause is the chat type, app setup, carrier, device, or software version. Samsung notes that behavior can vary by device, carrier, software version, and region; some functionality may be limited on devices purchased outside the US even with a US carrier SIM.

What to do if you cannot leave
Mute the conversation
Muting stops or reduces notifications on your phone, depending on the app’s controls. It does not remove you from the group or prevent other participants’ messages from continuing to reach the conversation.
Delete the conversation from your phone
Deleting removes the chat from your local message list; it is not the same as leaving the group. Other participants’ group continues, and you may see the conversation again if new messages arrive.

Samsung lists muting or deleting as local alternatives when you cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by another person. Group-messaging behavior and limits can vary by carrier, so use the controls available in your own app rather than assuming deletion changes membership.
