You may not need to replace Samsung Gallery with Google Photos. Eligible Galaxy users can sync selected Gallery folders to Google Account storage and keep using Gallery on the phone—but this is not the same as Google Photos backup, and synced deletions remove media from both apps and the cloud.
Which app should you use day to day?
Choose based on what you need each app to do, not on the assumption that one must replace the other. Samsung Gallery remains the built-in place to browse, organize, edit and share media on a Galaxy device. Google Photos adds access to synced items from Google’s service, but some of its library features only apply to items backed up through Google Photos.

So the practical choice is often not “Gallery or Photos.” It is whether you want Gallery to remain your phone’s daily interface while selected media also lives in Google storage, or whether you need Google Photos backup and its fuller set of library features.

Gallery sync with Google storage connects selected Samsung Gallery media to your Google Account. Samsung says the media is saved at original quality and uses Google Account storage. If you already uploaded an item through Google Photos backup, Samsung says Gallery sync will not duplicate that upload.

That connection is not equivalent to enabling Google Photos backup. Google says Samsung-synced photos may be viewed and shared in Google Photos, but they will not appear in all Google Photos features. Search, Memories and Live albums are among the features that require the items to be backed up through Google Photos.
Plan around the storage available in your Google Account: Gallery-synced media counts against it. The cited Samsung guide does not specify a storage allowance for this workflow, so check the capacity shown for your own account before syncing a large library.

Check eligibility before looking for the setting
Samsung Support India’s guide, updated October 1, 2026, lists One UI 9.0 or later and a personal Google Account as requirements. It says supervised Google Accounts and Google Workspace accounts are not supported. These are the requirements in Samsung’s India guidance; the guide does not provide a complete model-by-model or region-by-region rollout list.
Check your phone’s Gallery settings and install available software updates if the option is missing. Availability can depend on device and rollout, so do not assume that every Galaxy phone in every region has the feature.

Set up sync and choose the folders
- Open Gallery and tap Menu.
- Tap Settings, then Sync photos and videos.
- Select the personal Google Account you want to use.
- Choose the albums or folders to sync, then tap Sync now. Keep the device connected to an active network while syncing.
You can select local folders such as Downloads or Screenshots. You do not have to sync the main camera roll: leave it out while selecting other folders if that better matches what you want stored in Google. The names or placement of options may vary with software version.
Understand deletion and edits before changing your library
Deleting a synced item removes it in both places
Once media is synced, deleting a photo or video from Samsung Gallery or Google Photos removes it from both apps and cloud storage. Treat deletion in either app as deletion of the shared synced item, not as a way to clear only one view. Review the sync relationship before cleaning up or deleting media.

Edits do not behave like one shared original
Google’s guidance says edits can appear as separate copies. An edit made on the web or another device does not overwrite the Samsung phone’s original. If you expect edits to replace the local original or stay identical across devices, check the resulting copies before deleting anything.

Disconnecting is different from deleting
If you want to stop syncing, use the sync controls rather than deleting media as a substitute. Google documents the sync relationship and its behavior in Google Photos Help; read its current instructions before changing the connection, particularly if you need to retain copies in a particular location.

What if you were using Samsung Gallery with OneDrive?
Direct Samsung Gallery sync to OneDrive ended after September 30, 2026. Microsoft says photos already in OneDrive remain accessible there and are not deleted by the change. To continue new camera uploads, Microsoft’s documented route is to turn on Camera backup in the OneDrive app; that is separate from direct Gallery sync.
Microsoft’s support notice provides the current Camera backup steps. If you choose Google storage instead, check the Google Account and feature requirements above rather than assuming the old OneDrive connection carries over.

- Keep Gallery as your everyday app: Use it for on-device browsing, organization and supported editing tools; select only the folders you want in Google storage.
- Need Google Photos features on those items: Use Google Photos backup for them. Gallery sync alone does not enable Search, Memories or Live albums.
- Want to avoid cloud uploads for some media: Exclude those folders from Gallery sync and check your Google Photos backup settings separately.
- Rely on OneDrive: Keep existing files there and enable Camera backup in the OneDrive app for new uploads, following Microsoft’s current instructions.
