To copy files between a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet and a Windows PC, unlock the device, connect it with a data-capable USB cable, allow access if prompted, and select Transferring files or MTP in the USB notification. Then open the phone in File Explorer. If it only charges or does not appear, check the USB mode, cable, and port before troubleshooting drivers.
How do I transfer files from a Samsung phone to a Windows computer?
- Unlock the Galaxy phone or tablet and connect it to the PC with a USB cable. If the devices use different connector types, use a compatible cable or adapter.
- If the phone asks whether to allow access to its data, tap Allow.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the USB connection notification. Choose Transferring files or MTP. Depending on the device and software version, the label may read Transferring files / Android Auto; select the file-transfer function, not Android Auto as a separate task.
- On the PC, open File Explorer, select the phone, and browse its storage. Photos are usually in the DCIM folder. If they were saved to a memory card, check the card’s DCIM folder.
- Copy files from the phone to the PC, or copy files from the PC into a suitable phone folder.
Samsung’s Windows photo-transfer instructions describe the File Explorer and DCIM workflow. The exact prompts and menu labels vary by Galaxy model and software version; if no prompt appears, check the USB notification because the connection may already be configured for file transfer.

Why is my Samsung phone charging but not showing up on my PC?
Charging confirms that the phone is receiving power, but not that the cable and connection are set up for data transfer. Try these checks in order:

- Choose a file-transfer mode. Open the USB notification and select Transferring files or MTP, rather than leaving the phone on charging only.
- Try a known data-capable cable. Samsung cautions that “Not all USB cables can transfer data.” Reseat both ends, then try another cable if needed; do not assume a cable supplied with another device supports data.
- Try another computer port. If the phone and PC have different connector types, use an adapter or cable suited to both ports.
- Test the connection on another supported computer if the phone still does not appear. The checks above do not prove that a failed connection is caused by a driver.
Samsung’s Smart Switch detection troubleshooting also covers cases where the MTP notification does not appear or Smart Switch cannot detect the device.

Do I need Samsung USB drivers?
Not necessarily. The official troubleshooting steps do not establish a universal requirement to install a standalone driver before connecting every Galaxy model to every computer. First check the access prompt, transfer mode, cable, and port.
When to reinstall the driver through Smart Switch
If Smart Switch on a PC or Mac does not recognize the Galaxy device, Samsung directs users to disconnect and restart the phone, then open Smart Switch and choose More options (the three-dot menu) > Reinstall device driver. Confirm the action and reconnect the phone. Samsung notes that the computer may need to restart before continuing. This is a Smart Switch troubleshooting step, not a universal first step for ordinary file copies.

Which USB mode should I use?

The cable’s ability to carry data and the phone’s selected USB mode are separate requirements: a data-capable cable alone does not select MTP, and selecting MTP cannot make a charge-only cable transfer files.

The File Explorer directions above are for Windows. Samsung’s cited Smart Switch troubleshooting applies to PC and Mac for device detection and driver reinstall, but the cited instructions do not establish one current, universal Finder workflow for every Mac version. For Mac-specific file access, check support for the exact Galaxy model and macOS setup, or use Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance where appropriate; do not assume the phone will mount in Finder just as it does in Windows File Explorer.

What if I want to move files without browsing the phone over USB?
- USB OTG flash drive: Samsung describes using a compatible external drive through the My Files app. OTG and external-storage support depend on the Galaxy model, so check the exact device before relying on this route.
- Smart Switch: Use it for wired data migration between devices. That is different from selecting files in File Explorer and copying them to or from a PC.
- Wireless or cloud transfer: Samsung lists wireless, cloud, Quick Share/Nearby Share, and Samsung Flow options for some transfer needs. Availability and steps depend on the devices and services involved.
Samsung’s media-transfer guidance states that media in Secure Folder cannot be transferred with the general file-moving methods described there. A USB connection does not bypass that limitation.
