If your Samsung Galaxy touchscreen works only sometimes, first check for a case or screen protector, moisture, charging-related symptoms, and whether the problem is limited to one app or part of the display. A missed tap alone does not prove that the screen has failed: Samsung lists temporary system errors, settings, software or app compatibility, accessories, moisture, and physical damage as possible causes. Work through the reversible checks below before considering a reset or service.
The menu paths are examples from Samsung Support US. Names and availability can vary by Galaxy model, carrier, software version, and Samsung Members app version.
1. Identify when and where touch fails
Before changing settings, note what the problem looks like and when it happens. This helps you see whether a simple condition changes the symptom; it does not diagnose the cause by itself.
- Does the whole screen miss touches, or does one strip or region seem unreliable?
- Does the problem occur in one app, after unlocking, or across the phone or tablet?
- Does it coincide with charging, a fitted case or protector, moisture, or a recent drop?
- Does touch work normally at some times and respond slowly or freeze at others?
Samsung says a frozen or unresponsive screen does not necessarily mean something is wrong with the device. Its troubleshooting guidance covers possible temporary system errors, settings, apps, accessories, moisture, and physical damage. 2. Rule out the case, protector, dirt, and moisture
Remove the case and screen protector temporarily, then test the screen. Pay particular attention to a protector that touches the display edge, is peeling, or has dust or air trapped beneath it. Testing without it is more useful than buying a replacement before you know whether it is interfering.
Use clean, dry fingers on a clean, dry display. Samsung notes that gloves, dusty fingers, fingernails, and a conductive object close to the screen can affect touch recognition. If the display is wet, gently wipe it with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. Do not press hard while wiping or testing.

3. Check whether the problem is tied to charging
If touch trouble happens while the Galaxy is charging, stop interacting with the screen during charging and see whether the symptom changes when the device is unplugged. Inspect the charger and cable; if the charger is damaged, stop using it and try an undamaged compatible charger. Samsung notes that a damaged charger may not supply power properly and may cause touchscreen malfunction, but charging is only a relevant lead when the timing fits your symptom. 4. Restart and check touch-related settings
Restart the device
Restart the phone or tablet normally, then test the screen again. If touch is entirely unavailable and the device is frozen, use the button instructions for your specific model. Samsung’s touchscreen guidance gives Power/Side plus Volume Down for 10 seconds, while its frozen-screen guidance says 7–10 seconds. Follow the instructions for your device rather than treating either duration as universal.

Check Touch sensitivity
On models that offer it, open Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity. Turning Touch sensitivity on may help when a screen protector is fitted. Samsung also cautions that leaving it on without a protective film may make input overly sensitive. Test the setting that matches your setup and return to the original setting if it makes control worse.
Check navigation gestures
A gesture at the display edge can be mistaken for a missed tap. As a diagnostic, try navigation buttons instead of full-screen navigation gestures if your device offers that option. Settings labels and paths vary by model and software version; Samsung includes these checks in its touchscreen troubleshooting guidance.

5. Update the device and isolate app problems
Check for available Galaxy software and app updates, then retest. If the issue began after installing or updating a third-party app, use Safe mode to see whether the symptom changes when downloaded apps are not running. Safe mode is an isolation step, not proof that an app is responsible.
- Start the Galaxy in Safe mode using the instructions for your model.
- Try the same screen actions that usually expose the problem.
- If touch works normally in Safe mode, investigate recently installed or updated apps one at a time, returning to normal mode to retest after each change.
If the symptom persists in Safe mode, that does not by itself prove hardware failure. Samsung recommends software and app checks as part of its display troubleshooting guidance.

6. Run Samsung Members touchscreen diagnostics
On supported devices, use Samsung Members to check the touch grid:
- Open Samsung Members > Diagnostics > Phone diagnostics > Touch screen.
- If the Touch screen test is not immediately visible, start the full diagnostics and then select the individual test.
- Trace all blank areas in the grid and review the result.
Samsung notes that test names and layouts can vary by model and app or software version. The diagnostic is a useful check, not a guarantee that a passing result rules out an intermittent fault. If it repeatedly misses the same area, that repeatable pattern is a practical reason to seek service; it is not a formal Samsung pass/fail rule. See Samsung’s display troubleshooting instructions.
7. Know when to stop troubleshooting
Arrange Samsung support or service if the display is visibly damaged. Also contact Samsung if touch trouble continues after you have tested without accessories, restarted, checked settings and updates, and tried Safe mode—or if the touchscreen diagnostic repeatedly misses the same area. Keep factory reset as a last resort
Samsung lists a factory data reset only after earlier troubleshooting. It erases content on the device, so back up important data before considering it. A reset is not an early step or a guaranteed repair for an intermittent touchscreen.
