Sometimes—but only if your work already fits Android. The Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra has a 14.6-inch screen and Samsung DeX, making it a plausible laptop stand-in for email, browser-based work, video calls, notes, documents and light multitasking. It is not a direct substitute for a Windows laptop when your work depends on desktop-only software or established Windows workflows. Samsung announced a US starting price of $1,399.99, before the cost of a compatible keyboard.
What the $1,399.99 price includes—and what it does not tell you
Samsung’s US announcement puts the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra’s starting price at $1,399.99, with availability beginning October 7, 2026. Those are announced US launch details, not a guaranteed current street price; taxes, configurations, later discounts and prices in other markets can differ. Samsung also announced a $1,199.99 starting price for the Tab S12+, but the larger Ultra is the model considered here. Samsung’s announcement is the source for those figures.
The price comparison should account for the complete setup, not just the tablet. Samsung presents a Pro Keyboard with trackpad and a Book Cover Keyboard Slim as S12-series options, and announced a limited-time 30% discount on either with purchase of a Tab S12-series device. Check the offer’s current availability, region and conditions, as well as the exact S12 Ultra keyboard model, compatibility and price, before budgeting. The discount is time-sensitive and does not establish what the keyboard will cost afterward.
Tom’s Guide listed a $399 price for a Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra Pro Keyboard in its 2026 review. That is an S11 accessory price, not a verified price for an S12 Ultra keyboard; it should not be added to the S12 Ultra’s price as if it were the confirmed cost of this setup.

Which laptop tasks it can handle well
For someone whose work is mainly in browser tabs, email, office documents, calls and notes, the S12 Ultra’s tablet-first design can make sense. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 Samsung tablet guide describes those everyday activities, plus light multitasking, as plausible laptop-replacement workloads, particularly with a keyboard and DeX.
Samsung says DeX provides a desktop-style interface with up to four workspaces. That may help arrange several tasks on the large display, but a desktop-like layout is not the same as having Windows software. Treat DeX as a way to organize supported tablet apps, not as a guarantee that every laptop program or workflow will transfer.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The product is also a tablet, not just a laptop with a detachable keyboard. Touch interaction and Android tablet apps may be meaningful advantages if you want to switch between work and tablet use. Whether those features justify the price depends on whether they matter in your day-to-day routine; they do not remove the need to check software compatibility.
Where DeX and Android may not replace your laptop
In its 2026 review, Tom’s Guide cautioned that DeX is not the Windows 11 equivalent some buyers might expect, and judged that the tablet would not be the laptop replacement some users want. That assessment is especially relevant if you depend on desktop-only programs, specialized peripherals, a particular Windows file workflow or familiar desktop multitasking behavior.

The available sources do not provide an app-by-app compatibility list, so there is no basis here to label any specific professional program incompatible. Before switching, check each essential app and peripheral on Android and confirm that your files, collaboration tools and organizational workflow behave as you need them to. If one indispensable task requires a Windows environment, the S12 Ultra alone may not be a practical replacement.
How its size, keyboard and battery affect everyday use
Samsung specifies a 14.6-inch display, approximately 5.1 mm thickness and approximately 692 g weight. That is a generous working area in a thin tablet body, but it is physically a large device rather than a compact tablet. Tom’s Guide similarly described it as thin and light for travel while finding the large tablet sometimes cumbersome to hold for long periods. That comfort observation is the reviewer’s subjective assessment.

- Retractable Mouse Pad - Retractable laptop mouse pad extends on both directions for the left/right handed with elevation along the edges for stopping mouse from falling off. The size of laptop tray is 14" X 9.7" and the size of mouse pad is 7.4" X 6.1".

- Widely Applicable - The smooth platform accommodates laptops and tablets up to 15.6 inches(Diagonal), making it a versatile accessory and one of the best gifts for mom, dad, students and professionals. Perfect for use as a laptop bed tray or tablet holder anywhere at home, library, or park.
A keyboard with a trackpad can make typing and pointer-based work more familiar, but the keyboard’s layout, stand, trackpad and stability on your usual work surface matter as much as the tablet’s screen. Try to assess the complete setup—especially if you expect to work on your lap—rather than judging suitability from the tablet alone. Confirm the keyboard’s model compatibility before purchase.
Tom’s Guide reported nearly 12 hours of battery life for its reviewed S12 Ultra configuration. That is a reviewer-reported result, not a standardized figure established here or a guarantee for every user; actual runtime depends on how the tablet is used.

Check these factors against a laptop before buying
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Full setup cost | Compare the tablet plus a compatible keyboard and cover, and any connectivity option you need, with the actual laptop configuration you would buy. Samsung’s announced US starting price is $1,399.99; the exact S12 Ultra keyboard cost is not established here. |
| Software and files | List every essential app, file workflow, peripheral and work tool, then confirm that it works as needed on Android and DeX. Tom’s Guide warns that DeX is not Windows 11. |
| Typing and pointing | Check the keyboard layout, trackpad, stand and lap stability for your working habits. Samsung advertises an S12-series Pro Keyboard with a trackpad; verify the exact compatible model and current price. |
| Portability and screen | Decide whether the 14.6-inch display and 692 g tablet body suit your travel and work setup. The large screen offers working area, while Tom’s Guide noted that the tablet can be cumbersome to hold for long periods. |
| Battery and support | Tom’s Guide reported nearly 12 hours in its review; this is reviewer experience, not a universal runtime. Samsung announced up to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, without a specific update-delivery schedule in that commitment. |
| Tablet-specific value | Consider whether touch use, Android tablet apps and a tablet-first form factor are valuable enough to offset the desktop-software differences for your work. |
Who should consider it as a laptop alternative?
It may suit you if
- Your everyday tasks are mostly email, web research, calls, notes, documents and light multitasking.
- Your essential apps and work files function properly on Android, and the keyboard setup suits how you type.
- You want a large tablet screen and will use its tablet features as well as DeX.
Keep a laptop in the comparison if
- Your job relies on desktop-only software or a Windows-specific workflow.
- You need a specialist peripheral or multitasking behavior that you have not confirmed on Android and DeX.
- The total tablet-and-keyboard price approaches or exceeds a laptop that already runs the software you need.
For ownership planning, Samsung says the S12 Ultra is eligible for up to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. Samsung also describes Care+ as covering accidental-damage repairs, extended warranty and certified expert support at home and abroad; availability and terms vary by location, so check the current local plan details rather than assuming a particular price or coverage.
