The exact controls depend on your tablet’s software and navigation settings.
Choose split screen or pop-up view

Both options are available from the app icon menu in Recents when supported by the app and tablet software. Samsung’s Galaxy tablet multitasking guide documents these modes.

Open two apps side by side
- Open Recents. Tap the Recents button in the Navigation bar. If your tablet uses full-screen gestures, use the Recents gesture instead.
- Open the first app’s menu. Tap the app’s icon above its preview; do not tap the preview itself.
- Choose split screen. Tap Open in split screen view.
- Choose the second app. Select it from Recents or the Apps screen. It appears in the other pane.
- Adjust the layout. Drag the divider between the apps to give either one more screen space.
To close the split view, open Recents and tap X on the split-screen view, as described in Samsung’s tablet guide.
Open a floating app window
- Open Recents.
- Tap the app’s icon, then choose Open in pop-up view.
- Drag the window to move it, or drag its sides to resize it.
Pop-up controls can let you adjust opacity, minimize the window to a floating icon, expand it to full screen, or close it. Closing the pop-up leaves the app in Recents. The available controls may differ by software version; see Samsung’s instructions.

Try gestures or the Taskbar if your tablet supports them
Samsung documents additional shortcuts as One UI 4.1.1 features. On interfaces that provide them, swipe two fingers from an edge or the bottom toward the middle to enter split screen; swipe one finger from either top corner toward the center to open pop-up view. Samsung also describes dragging an app from the Taskbar or Recents to an edge for split screen, or to the center for pop-up view. These gestures and drag targets are not guaranteed to be available on every Galaxy Tab. Check your tablet’s current interface before relying on them. Samsung’s One UI 4.1.1 feature page describes the shortcuts.
If the options are missing or an app will not open
- The app may not support split screen. Samsung notes that some apps cannot be used in split screen view. If the option is unavailable, try a different app or use pop-up view if it is offered.
- Your navigation layout may look different. Recents can appear on the right if you have customized the Navigation bar, or be accessed through full-screen gestures instead of a button. Samsung’s Recents guide explains that Recents placement and available screens can vary.
- Labels and controls can vary. Samsung says screens and settings may differ by software version and wireless service provider. Look for the app icon menu in Recents, but expect its options to depend on your tablet.
- Do not assume every model supports the same number of windows. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S8 guide describes using two or three apps in Multi Window on that model; it does not establish the same maximum for every Galaxy Tab.
Set up the tablet for hands-free use
A compatible stand or case can prop up a tablet while you read or watch in one pane and work in another. Samsung’s Tab S8 guide mentions propping that model up with a Book Cover; this is optional and not required to activate Multi Window. Check compatibility for your exact tablet before choosing an accessory. Samsung’s Tab S8 guide provides that model-specific context.
