The S8+ and S9+ have the largest displays at 6.2 inches, but their bodies are only about 74 mm wide. The S8 and S9 are close in size, not identical—a distinction that matters when buying a case.
This comparison covers body dimensions, weight, display size and practical handling. Measurements use Samsung specifications: global launch information for the S7 family and S8 family, and Samsung’s US specification sheet for S9/S9+. Regional variants may differ in some details.
All six Galaxy phones: dimensions and screen sizes
Dimensions are height × width × thickness. The approximate front footprint is height multiplied by width; it excludes rounded corners, curved glass, cameras and cases, so it is a comparison aid rather than literal contact area.

Which one is smallest, narrowest or lightest?
- Shortest and lightest: Galaxy S7, at 142.4 mm tall and 152 g.
- Narrowest: Galaxy S8, at 68.1 mm wide. It is 6.5 mm taller than the S7, despite being 1.5 mm narrower.
- Thinnest: Galaxy S7 edge, at 7.7 mm. Thickness alone does not make it easiest to grip; it is wider and taller than the S7.
The S9 is close to the S8 in height, but is 0.6 mm wider, 0.5 mm thicker and 8 g heavier. These are small differences in a side-by-side view, but they can affect exact accessory fit.
Why the screen diagonal can mislead
The S7 and S7 edge have 16:9 displays, while the S8, S8+, S9 and S9+ use taller 18.5:9 screens. A diagonal number alone does not tell you how wide the phone feels or how much screen area it offers in a particular shape. Samsung’s launch specifications list the display sizes and formats for the S8 family and S9 family.
- Largest: S8+ and S9+, each with a 6.2-inch display.
- Next: S8 and S9, each with a 5.8-inch display.
- Then: S7 edge at 5.5 inches.
- Smallest: S7 at 5.1 inches.
The S8 and S9 offer 5.8-inch screens in bodies with nearly the same front footprint as the S7, whose screen is 5.1 inches. The taller display design is why a larger diagonal does not translate directly into a proportionally wider phone.

Galaxy S7 versus S7 edge
The S7 edge is 8.5 mm taller and 3.0 mm wider than the S7, while 0.2 mm thinner. It weighs just 5 g more and increases the display diagonal from 5.1 to 5.5 inches. Samsung’s launch material lists battery capacities of 3,000 mAh for the S7 and 3,600 mAh for the S7 edge; capacity is not a guarantee of battery life, particularly on a used phone.

The edge model’s curved screen changes the feel and makes conventional flat screen protectors a less straightforward fit. The two phones have different chassis shapes, so S7 cases and screen protectors should not be assumed to fit the S7 edge, or vice versa.
Galaxy S8 versus S9: nearly the same, but not identical
Both phones have 5.8-inch, 2960 × 1440 displays. The S9 is 1.2 mm shorter, 0.6 mm wider and 0.5 mm thicker than the S8, and weighs 8 g more. Samsung describes the screen size and resolution as essentially unchanged while noting slight external dimensional differences; see its S8/S9 comparison.

They can look almost identical at a glance, but close dimensions do not establish case compatibility. Camera, fingerprint-reader, button and port openings may not line up, so choose an accessory labeled for the exact model.
Galaxy S8+ versus S9+: same diagonal, different body and camera layout
Both Plus phones have 6.2-inch displays. The S9+ is 1.4 mm shorter, 0.4 mm wider and 0.4 mm thicker than the S8+, and weighs 16 g more. The camera layouts also differ: the S8+ has one rear camera, while the S9+ has two. A case cutout designed for one should not be presumed to fit the other.
How much larger are the Plus models?
Compared with its standard-size counterpart, each Plus model adds about 10 mm of height and 5 mm of width, as well as a 6.2-inch rather than 5.8-inch display. The S8+ adds 18 g over the S8; the S9+ adds 26 g over the S9.

In everyday handling, the added width is often more consequential for reaching across the screen than the added height. The extra weight can also be more apparent during long reading or video sessions.

Based on width, height, weight and edge shape—not a hands-on test—a reasonable easiest-to-hardest handling order for many people is:
- Galaxy S7
- Galaxy S8
- Galaxy S9
- Galaxy S7 edge
- Galaxy S8+
- Galaxy S9+
Hand size, case bulk, grip preference and accessories such as a ring grip can change that order. The S8 is narrower than the S7, for example, while the S7 is shorter and lighter. A case can add 1–3 mm or more to thickness and several millimeters to width, enough to make neighboring models feel less distinct. Curved glass and rounded edges also feel different from a flat slab, so dimensions cannot fully predict comfort.

Case and screen-protector compatibility
Do not use a matching screen diagonal or nearly matching body dimensions as proof that an accessory fits. Check the exact phone model and the accessory maker’s compatibility list.
- S7 and S7 edge accessories are not interchangeable by default.
- S8 and S9 cases are not automatically interchangeable.
- S8+ and S9+ cases are not automatically interchangeable; the rear-camera cutout is especially different.
- Curved-screen phones may need protectors designed specifically for their display edges.
Buying one of these phones used in 2026
Size may determine which model feels right, but it does not establish whether a particular used phone will work well or suit your carrier. Before paying, check:
- Exact model and region: Confirm the model number and whether it is the version intended for your market.
- Network compatibility: Verify LTE bands and carrier support, as well as whether the phone is locked or unlocked.
- IMEI status: Check that the device is not reported lost, stolen or blocked.
- Battery and screen condition: Ask about battery replacement or condition; inspect the OLED for burn-in, tint, dead pixels and edge damage.
- Ports and repairs: Check charging-port wear and ask about repairs or drops. Do not treat an older phone’s original water-resistance rating as a guarantee after damage or repair.
- Software and apps: Confirm the phone’s software compatibility meets the needs of the apps you rely on.
- Listing protections: Review the seller’s return terms and warranty for that specific listing rather than assuming every marketplace listing has the same coverage.
Because these are 2016–2018 models, compare the total cost of a used handset—including any likely battery or repair expense—with a newer used phone before deciding. Current availability and price depend on model, condition, seller and region.
