This guide covers those shortcuts, Face ID recovery, privacy, camera controls, battery care and the iOS limits that matter in 2026.
Start with the iPhone X gestures
Apple documents the Face ID interface in its iPhone gesture guide. Begin swipes at the edge, not in the middle of the screen.
| Action | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Go Home | Swipe up from the bottom edge. |
| Open App Switcher | Swipe up, pause in the middle, then release. |
| Switch apps | Swipe left or right along the bottom edge. |
| Control Center | Swipe down from the extreme top-right corner. |
| Notification Center | Swipe down from the top-center or top-left. |
| Lock | Press the side button. |
| Wake | Raise the phone, tap the display or press the side button. |
| Siri | Say “Hey Siri” or hold the side button. |
| Screenshot | Press and quickly release the side button and Volume Up together. |
| Power off | Hold the side button and either volume button, then drag the slider. |
| Force restart | Quickly press Volume Up, quickly press Volume Down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo. |
| Apple Pay | Double-click the side button and authenticate with Face ID. |
| Emergency SOS | Hold the side button and either volume button; regional countdown and calling behavior apply. |
Recover when a gesture fails
- If Control Center does not appear, start at the top-right corner; a center swipe opens Notification Center.
- If Home fails, begin at the bottom bezel and swipe upward.
- For App Switcher, pause briefly after the upward swipe.
- If the screen is wet or unresponsive, dry it, disconnect suspect accessories and use the force-restart sequence.
Make Face ID reliable
Wake the display, look toward the phone and swipe up. Face ID can authorize unlocks, Apple Pay, App Store purchases and supported apps, but the passcode remains mandatory after a restart, software update, erase, repeated failures and other security events.
Check attention and privacy settings
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode to enroll Face ID, choose what it authenticates and review Lock Screen access.
- Under Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention, review Require Attention for Face ID. Disabling it can help some users but removes the check that you are looking at the phone.
- Attention Aware Features can keep the display awake while you look at it and lower alert volume when attention is detected. Its location can vary by iOS release; use Settings search if necessary.
Fix Face ID failures in order
- Clean the notch and TrueDepth-camera area.
- Remove a case or screen protector that overlaps the sensors.
- Hold the phone in front of your face with your eyes directed at the display; Apple emphasizes keeping your face within the frame rather than one universal distance.
- Remove sunglasses, masks or other obstructions and try normal lighting.
- Restart the iPhone and authenticate with the passcode when requested.
- If failures continue, use Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID, then enroll again.
Hardware damage around the TrueDepth system requires qualified service. Apple’s Face ID guidance explains attention and setup requirements at its support page.

Control Center, recording and payments
Swipe from the top-right to open Control Center. Touch and hold a control for expanded options. Depending on your iOS 16 point release, the arrangement can differ.
Add useful controls
Go to Settings > Control Center and add Screen Recording, Low Power Mode, Accessibility Shortcuts, Wallet or other available controls. Brightness, volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, flashlight, timer and camera are useful defaults. Apple’s access instructions are at Control Center support.
Record the screen
- Open Settings > Control Center and add Screen Recording if missing.
- Swipe down from the top-right and tap the recording icon.
- Wait for the countdown, then record.
- Stop from the red status indicator or Control Center.
Touch and hold the recording icon before starting to toggle microphone audio. Exact controls vary by installed iOS version.
Use Apple Pay
Double-click the side button, look at the phone for Face ID, then hold the top of the iPhone near a contactless terminal. If nothing happens, review Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay or use AssistiveTouch. Apple Pay depends on country, bank, card issuer, merchant and current Apple service support.

Protect the Lock Screen and passcode
Face ID can reveal notification contents only after it recognizes you. Configure privacy at Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and review Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Allow Access When Locked. Disable Control Center, Notification Center, Wallet, Siri or USB Accessories there if another person might handle the locked phone. Removing access improves privacy but also removes convenience. See Apple’s Lock Screen controls guide.
Choose a stronger passcode
The normal choice is a six-digit code. Tap Passcode Options for a four-digit code, custom numeric code or custom alphanumeric code; longer codes resist guessing better. Erase Data can erase the iPhone after 10 failed attempts, so enable it only if you maintain reliable backups. Apple details these choices at Passcode and security support.
Avoid accidental Emergency SOS calls
Holding the side button and either volume button starts the Emergency SOS interface and may call emergency services after its countdown. In Settings > Emergency SOS, review options such as Call with Hold and Call with 5 Presses; options and emergency numbers vary by region.
Camera tricks that work on iPhone X
- Swipe left from the Lock Screen or open Camera from Control Center for a fast launch.
- Use either volume button as the shutter.
- Tap a subject to focus, then drag the sun icon beside the focus box to adjust exposure.
- Touch and hold the focus area for AE/AF Lock, then recompose.
- Use Portrait mode with enough distance and even light; edge detection is less reliable in poor conditions.
- Set a timer for hands-free shots and turn on the grid and level in Camera settings for composition.
- Avoid heavy digital zoom when detail matters and hold the phone steady in low light.
- Touch-and-hold shutter behavior can vary by installed iOS version; check the on-screen Camera response.
Do not expect every newer Camera feature: iPhone X does not gain later Photographic Styles, Cinematic mode or other hardware-dependent processing simply through an update.

Improve battery life without disabling everything
Check the cause first
- Open Settings > Battery to identify apps using unusual energy.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and inspect Maximum Capacity and peak-performance information.
- Use Low Power Mode during travel, low battery or long periods away from a charger.
- Reduce brightness, unnecessary background activity, location access and push notifications only where the convenience trade-off is acceptable.
- Keep free storage available and install the newest update offered to the phone.
Weak cellular coverage, high brightness, background work and an aged battery can all contribute to drain; no single switch guarantees a dramatic improvement.
Decide whether to replace the battery
Apple treats batteries as consumable parts and warns that nongenuine or poorly installed batteries can cause inaccurate health reporting, performance problems and safety risks. Use Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider or another qualified provider; details are at Apple battery support. A battery replacement makes sense when the rest of the phone works, but not necessarily when Face ID, the display, charging port or logic board also needs major repair.

- Back up the iPhone.
- Connect it to power and Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install the latest version Apple offers for this model.
- If it fails, free storage, restart and retry, or update through a computer.
Apple’s security-release page retrieved for this guide lists iOS 16.7.16 for iPhone X, released May 11, 2026. Apple lists iOS 18 and iOS 26 releases for newer hardware, not iPhone X. Check Apple’s current security releases and the Software Update screen immediately before relying on that version, because point updates can change.
The iPhone X therefore cannot be treated as an iOS 18 or iOS 26 device. Apps set their own minimum iOS version, so compatibility may decline even while security updates remain available. Apple’s update procedure is documented at Software Update support.

One-handed use and accessibility shortcuts
Reachability
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch.
- Turn on Reachability.
- Swipe down on the bottom edge of the display.
If it fails, start at the very bottom edge. Menu wording can move between releases; Settings search is useful.
AssistiveTouch and other practical tools
Turn on Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch for an onscreen menu with Home, App Switcher, Control Center, screenshots, Siri and volume actions. It is a useful fallback when the side button is unreliable. Also consider larger text, Zoom, Voice Control, VoiceOver, Reduce Motion, Guided Access and a side-button accessibility shortcut. Apple’s AssistiveTouch guide is at this support page. Back Tap availability depends on the installed iOS version.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Face ID unavailable: clean and uncover the sensors, restart, enter the passcode, then reset Face ID only after checking for damage.
- Control Center missing: swipe from the extreme top-right, not the center.
- Phone frozen: perform the Volume Up, Volume Down, side-button force restart.
- Battery drains quickly: inspect Battery usage and Maximum Capacity before changing multiple settings.
- Update unavailable: confirm the model, free storage, use Wi-Fi and power, then try a computer update.
- Side button broken: enable AssistiveTouch as a temporary replacement and arrange qualified repair.
- Screen Recording missing: add it under Settings > Control Center.
- Apple Pay will not launch: check the Wallet side-button setting, Face ID status, card support and regional availability.
Repair or replace?
Repair is usually the sensible path when the battery is the main fault and the phone otherwise meets your needs. Replacement becomes more rational when several components are failing, required apps no longer support iOS 16, or the repair quote approaches a supported refurbished model. Check current options at Apple’s battery service, repair, refurbished iPhone and trade-in pages; prices and availability vary by country and inspection.
