1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—some Samsung Galaxy S5 variants can run Android 12L through LineageOS 19.1, but there is no single ROM for every S5. You must match the phone’s exact model and device codename to the ROM, recovery, and instructions. In 2026, also check whether the specific build is archived, unofficial, or still maintained before relying on it.
LineageOS 19.1 is based on Android 12L. A download that still exists is not proof of current support or recent security patches, and a ROM that boots is not necessarily reliable for calls, camera, or daily use.
Which Galaxy S5 models can use an Android 12L ROM?
“Galaxy S5” covers several hardware families. Their ROMs are not interchangeable. The mappings below are examples; confirm the codename on the installation page for your exact model before downloading anything.
| Model examples | Likely device family | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| SM-G900F, G900M, G900R4, G900R7, G900T, G900T3, G900V, G900W8 and related LTE variants | klte or a carrier-specific klte* target |
Use only the build and instructions matching the exact target. The LineageOS klte device page lists standard LTE-family models. |
| SM-G900FD / G900MD | klteduos |
Use the Duos-specific ROM and installation guide. |
| SM-G9006V / G9008V | kltechn |
Use the China-specific target; do not substitute a standard klte package. |
| SM-G900I / G900P | kltedv or another regional target, depending on the exact device |
Verify the model and codename on the build page; do not infer compatibility from the retail name. |
| SM-G870 models (Galaxy S5 Active) | klteactivexx or a related Active target |
Find a build specifically for the Active variant. |
| SM-G901F and related S5 LTE-A models | A separate family, commonly lentislte or related |
Do not treat it as a standard S5 LTE device. |
The LineageOS device listing shows separate targets, including klte and kltechn. The table is a starting point, not permission to flash a package without checking the exact device page.

Find your model and confirm its codename
- While Android works, check Settings → About phone → Model number.
- Check the model label beneath the battery, if accessible.
- If Android does not start, identify the model through Download Mode or the device label.
- Compare that model with the ROM maintainer’s supported-device list and installation instructions.
A carrier name or a filename containing klte is not enough to establish compatibility. Certain carrier models may have different bootloader restrictions, modem requirements, or procedures.
Is LineageOS 19.1 still supported?
LineageOS 19.1 corresponds to Android 12L; LineageOS 18.1 corresponds to Android 11, as shown in the LineageOS version and GApps documentation. Android 12L is an older release. The material available for some S5 variants includes device pages and instructions, but it does not establish that every S5 Android 12L build is actively maintained in 2026.
Before choosing a build, check its exact device page or maintainer release page for the latest build date, changelog, security patch level, and whether it is official, archived, or unofficial. Official historical builds, independent ports, and newer community ROMs are different things; an available archive is not evidence of ongoing security updates. Do not assume that a newer Android version has better device support or fewer bugs.
What to download before you start
- ROM: LineageOS 19.1 package for the exact device codename.
- Recovery: the image and version required by that ROM’s installation guide.
- Samsung firmware: exact-model firmware if the device guide requires a stock firmware base.
- Google apps, optionally: a package matching LineageOS 19.1 and the device’s ARM or ARM64 architecture. The LineageOS documentation lists MindTheGapps packages for Android 12L, but Google apps are independently packaged and unsupported by LineageOS.
- Computer tools: Google’s Android SDK Platform-Tools; install Samsung USB drivers if required on Windows.
- Recovery option: stock firmware for the exact model, in case you need to restore the phone.
- Integrity information: checksums or signatures published by the ROM maintainer, if available.
Do not use a recovery, firmware package, or GApps file just because it is described as “for the Galaxy S5.” Match each item to the device and Android version specified by the maintainer.

- Transfer authenticator accounts, 2FA recovery codes, and other sign-in credentials. Do not assume an authenticator app’s data will survive a reset.
- Back up internal storage to a computer or another device.
- If the device-specific community guide provides a supported method, preserve EFS or modem-related data before flashing. Do not wipe those partitions as part of a routine installation.
- Charge the phone to roughly 60% or more, use a known-good data-capable USB cable, and keep the exact-model stock firmware available.
- Confirm that the bootloader can be flashed on your particular model. Unlocking and flashing procedures are not universal, especially across carrier variants.
Check the Samsung firmware requirement
Firmware prerequisites vary by S5 target. The LineageOS guide for klteduos explicitly requires Android 6.0.1 stock operating-system firmware before installation and notes that simply having run another custom ROM does not prove the prerequisite is met. Check your exact codename’s guide rather than applying that requirement automatically to every S5.
If your guide requires stock Android 6.0.1, install the correct regional or carrier firmware for your exact model first. An older Samsung firmware base can contribute to boot, radio, or compatibility problems. Never substitute firmware from a similar-looking model.
Install LineageOS 19.1
Use the current device-specific guide for the exact recovery image, package names, and wipe sequence. The steps below describe the general flow, not a universal flashing recipe. Stop if the model, codename, or recovery does not match, or if recovery reports a compatibility error.

- Meet the firmware prerequisite. Install the exact stock firmware version required by the device guide before continuing.
- Install the specified custom recovery. The S5 uses Samsung Download Mode rather than the fastboot process common on many newer Android phones. Follow the device guide’s method for flashing recovery.
- Boot into recovery. The S5-family documentation gives Volume Up + Home + Power for recovery and Volume Down + Home + Power for Download Mode. Confirm the combination for your exact device page.
- Wipe only what the guide specifies. A factory reset removes user data. Some older workflows may require a system wipe or formatting data; recovery instructions vary. Do not wipe modem, EFS, or other radio partitions as a routine step.
- Install the ROM. Sideload or select the ZIP for the exact codename using the method described by the recovery and device guide.
- Install GApps before the first boot, if wanted. Flash the matching Android 12L package immediately after the ROM, without rebooting into LineageOS between them.
- Reboot and set up Android. First boot takes longer than a normal restart. Once setup is complete, test essential phone functions before trusting the device.
LineageOS provides separate installation instructions for devices such as the S5 Duos. Follow the instructions for your own target; do not infer filenames or steps from another variant.
Useful ADB commands
Commands work only when the phone and current recovery state support them. They do not replace the device-specific flashing instructions.

adb devices
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot download
adb sideload filename.zip
adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/ ./S5-backup/
adb reboot download may not work in every recovery; use the hardware keys if needed. If a maintainer publishes a SHA-256 checksum, compare it with the downloaded file using sha256sum filename.zip on Linux or macOS, or Get-FileHash .filename.zip -Algorithm SHA256 in Windows PowerShell. A checksum from an unrelated mirror does not establish that a file is authentic.
What to test after installation
Successful startup does not establish that every function works on your model or build. Test the features you need, then check the maintainer’s notes for known limitations.
Recommended Free Tools
- SIM detection, calls, SMS, and mobile data.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, audio, and microphone.
- Camera, flash, proximity sensor, vibration, and sleep/wake behavior.
- MicroSD, USB file transfer, and battery charging.
- NFC and fingerprint reader, where fitted.
- Google Play certification and essential banking, payment, streaming, or work apps, if installed.
Do not assume VoLTE, fingerprint, NFC, camera quality, or DRM support from a successful boot. Carrier bands and service depend on the model and network; an old S5 with LTE is not guaranteed to work on every current carrier, particularly in the United States.

Recovery rejects the ROM or the phone bootloops
- Recheck the model-to-codename match, including whether the phone is an Active, Duos, LTE-A, Neo, or regional model.
- Confirm that the recovery is the one required by the ROM and that the package is intact.
- Check whether the exact device guide requires a specific stock firmware base.
- Repeat the clean-install procedure only as the guide directs; verify that the ROM and any GApps package are both for LineageOS 19.1.
- Check the unofficial maintainer’s notes for additional vendor, firmware, or patch requirements.
If recovery is accessible, return to it and follow the matching installation guide rather than forcing an incompatible ZIP. A long first boot can occur, but a persistent bootloop needs diagnosis rather than repeated blind flashing.
Google apps crash or setup fails
GApps are optional, separate from LineageOS, and not supported by the LineageOS team. The GApps guidance says to install the matching package immediately after LineageOS and before the first boot. If the phone has already booted without GApps, the guidance calls for a factory reset before trying again. Confirm the package is for LineageOS 19.1 and the correct architecture; do not mix Android 11 GApps with Android 12L.

There is no SIM, call service, or mobile data
Possible causes include a wrong regional target, modem or baseband mismatch, unsupported bands, carrier network changes, VoLTE limitations, EFS damage, or a ROM-specific telephony bug. Check the model and maintainer notes first; do not flash modem files or wipe radio-related partitions unless the exact device instructions call for it.

Recovery is unavailable or the phone will not boot
- Power the phone off and try the documented recovery key combination.
- If recovery is available, restore a valid backup or follow the exact device guide to reinstall.
- If recovery is not available, try to enter Download Mode with the documented key combination.
- Restore stock firmware for the exact model with the appropriate Samsung flashing tool, following a reliable model-specific procedure.
A software bootloop may be recoverable; failing storage or a swollen battery can indicate hardware trouble. Do not use firmware from a related model as a recovery shortcut.
Is Android 12L worth installing on a Galaxy S5 in 2026?
LineageOS 19.1 can provide a newer Android interface, more customization, and a cleaner system than Samsung’s final Android 6.0.1 firmware on a compatible device. It can also extend the usefulness of an old phone for lightweight media, navigation, experimentation, or testing. But a newer Android base cannot replace aged storage, limited RAM, an old processor, or a worn battery.
| Use case | How suitable is Android 12L? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Secondary or experimental phone | Often the most sensible use | You can accept manual maintenance and test functions before depending on them. |
| Reliable daily phone for banking, work, or payments | Risky | App acceptance, certification, security patches, carrier service, and device-specific bugs are not guaranteed. |
| Light media or navigation device | Potentially useful | Suitability depends on battery condition, app support, GPS, and the ROM’s performance on your variant. |
| Emergency phone | Do not rely on it without testing | Calls, network compatibility, battery health, and carrier support must all be dependable. |
Consider LineageOS 18.1 (Android 11) if a more mature or lighter build is available for your exact variant and stability matters more than Android 12-era features. A newer unofficial ROM may be appropriate if it has a credible maintainer and well-documented fixes, but newer Android can be more demanding and is not automatically safer. Stock Samsung firmware is an option if its limitations suit your needs. If you need current security support, dependable VoLTE, modern app compatibility, or a healthy battery, a newer phone is the more practical choice.
