As of 14 October 2026, the Samsung Galaxy S27 “outdated cameras” story is only partly supported. An early tip claimed the standard S27 could receive no meaningful camera upgrade, but later leaks point to a possible Sony main sensor for the S27 and S27+ and a possible 16MP autofocus selfie camera for the higher-tier models. The much-discussed square sensor is speculation about the front camera, not a confirmed Samsung feature.
Why the Galaxy S27 is being described as unchanged
The original base-model rumor
Digital Camera World reported on 18 June 2026 that a tip attributed to Lanzuk claimed the vanilla Galaxy S27 was unlikely to receive camera or display upgrades. The explanation was limited component-development activity. That report described the information as very early speculation and placed the expected launch window in February or March 2027.

This claim applies primarily to the standard S27. It does not establish that Samsung will reuse every Galaxy S26 camera across the S27, S27+, S27 Pro and S27 Ultra, and it was not based on an announced Samsung specification.
Later evidence points in a different direction
Android Authority reported on 23 July 2026 that Galaxy Club sources had identified a possible 50MP Sony-supplied primary sensor for both the S27 and S27+. That would be a change in sensor supplier from the confirmed S26 specification, although the leak does not establish the sensor’s final performance or whether the rest of the camera system changes.

A separate Android Authority report on 24 July described NM1 through NM4 device codenames and possible 50MP Sony IMX855 ultrawide hardware on upper-tier models. The same report mentioned possible 16MP autofocus selfie cameras for those models. These are leaked details, not specifications published by Samsung.
What the “square sensor” rumor actually means
Phandroid reported on 3 July 2026 that the possible 16MP front camera for the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra had prompted speculation about a square sensor. The report did not confirm a square-shaped sensor, and it was unclear whether the standard S27 and S27+ would receive the rumored front-camera upgrade.

In other words, “square sensor” describes a debated front-camera design possibility. It is not evidence of a square rear camera, and it should not be presented as a confirmed S27 feature. Until Samsung publishes hardware details, the sensor shape, resolution and model coverage remain unsettled.

The S26 figures provide the only firm reference point in the current reporting. Samsung’s detailed base-S26 specification lists a 50MP + 10MP + 12MP rear system, f/1.8, f/2.4 and f/2.2 apertures, optical image stabilization, 3x optical zoom and a 12MP autofocus front camera.

Other S27 camera claims remain disputed
Variable aperture
Earlier rumors suggested Samsung could add a variable-aperture camera. On 13 August 2026, 9to5Google reported that Samsung might omit it. There is no confirmed S27 aperture specification to resolve the conflict.
200MP sensor plans
Tech Advisor reported on 7 August 2026 that Samsung’s newly announced 200MP ISOCELL HPC was unlikely to appear in the S27 range. The same report said the phones were instead rumored to use an HP6 module. That is another leak, not a final component list, and it should not be confused with the S26 Ultra’s officially listed 200MP wide camera.

Should you buy the Galaxy S26 or wait?
Buying the S26 makes sense when certainty matters
- The S26 and S26+ have published camera specifications, including a 50MP wide camera, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP 3x telephoto and 12MP selfie camera.
- The S26 Ultra has a documented 200MP wide camera, 50MP ultrawide, two telephoto cameras and a 12MP selfie camera.
- You can judge image quality and camera features from shipping hardware instead of relying on leaks.
If you shop through Amazon, verify that the listing, price and regional availability are current. A Galaxy S27 listing and final camera specification should not be treated as available facts.
Waiting is sensible if the camera changes are your priority
- The possible Sony primary sensor for the S27 and S27+ could make the “same old camera” claim inaccurate.
- The upper models may receive a 50MP Sony ultrawide and 16MP autofocus selfie cameras, but those details are not confirmed.
- Waiting also gives Samsung time to clarify whether variable aperture, the HP6 module and the rumored square front sensor exist in shipping phones.
The trade-off is timing: the earliest report expected a February or March 2027 launch window, and Samsung had not officially specified the S27 camera system in the available reporting.

What to check before treating a leak as fact
- Look for a Samsung product page or launch announcement that names each sensor, lens and aperture.
- Check whether a claimed upgrade applies to the base and Plus phones or only to the Pro and Ultra models.
- Separate a resolution increase from a genuine hardware change: a 50MP label alone does not establish sensor size, lens quality or low-light performance.
- Confirm whether “square sensor” refers to the front camera and whether Samsung actually uses that design in the released phone.
- Recheck regional specifications, because a retailer listing can appear before Samsung’s complete documentation and may contain provisional information.
Bottom line
The Galaxy S27 camera story is still a set of competing rumors. The no-upgrade warning is most relevant to the base model and remains unconfirmed; possible Sony hardware and new upper-tier selfie cameras point to a more complicated lineup. The square sensor is only a front-camera theory. For a purchase today, the Galaxy S26 is the known quantity. For a possible camera redesign, waiting until Samsung publishes the S27 specifications is the only way to replace speculation with facts.
