The Galaxy S23 and iPhone 15 were near-equals in US launch price at 128GB, but they suit different priorities: choose the S23 for its 120Hz display and dedicated 3x telephoto camera, or the iPhone 15 for iOS, Dynamic Island, and a listed 512GB option. Neither is the universal winner, and those 2023 prices do not tell you what either phone costs today.

Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 15 specifications

Both are compact 2023 flagship phones with 6.1-inch-class OLED displays. The most meaningful differences are refresh rate, camera zoom design, operating system, storage choices, and charging details.

Adapter wattage alone is not a like-for-like measure of charging speed or battery life. [Samsung accessory guidance] [Apple specifications]
Water resistance IP68 (TechRadar) IP68; Apple specifies up to 6m for 30 minutes under IEC 60529 Apple states a specific test condition; the ratings do not establish identical warranty coverage. [TechRadar] [Apple specifications]

Which display is better for you?

Choose the Galaxy S23 for a smoother refresh rate

TechRadar lists an adaptive 48–120Hz refresh rate for the S23. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations appear smoother than a standard 60Hz screen. This is the clearest display advantage for the Samsung model.

Choose the iPhone 15 for its listed resolution and outdoor peak

Apple specifies 2556 × 1179 resolution and 2,000-nit outdoor peak brightness for the iPhone 15. Those published figures favor the iPhone in pixel count and stated outdoor peak, but they do not by themselves establish how the screens compare in every lighting condition.

How do the cameras differ?

Galaxy S23: a dedicated 3x telephoto camera

The S23’s rear system adds a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom alongside its 50MP main and 12MP ultra-wide cameras. That separate lens is useful when you want a closer framing without relying solely on a crop from the main camera.

iPhone 15: 48MP main camera and sensor-based 2x option

Apple lists a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide. Its 2x telephoto option is enabled by the quad-pixel main sensor; it is not a separate telephoto camera. Apple also describes a 24MP default for high-resolution photos and next-generation portrait features in its September 2023 launch announcement. These are Apple’s descriptions of its camera features, not an independent comparison of image quality.

If reach matters most, the S23’s dedicated 3x camera is the more direct hardware choice. If you prefer Apple’s camera processing and features, the iPhone takes a different approach. The available specifications do not establish a universal image-quality winner.

Which operating system and performance profile fits?

The S23 runs Android in Samsung’s One UI environment and uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. The iPhone 15 runs iOS on Apple’s A16 Bionic. Choose based first on the platform, services, and devices you already use: switching ecosystems can matter more day to day than a small specification difference.

TechRadar reports that the iPhone 15 won most of the benchmarks in its comparison. That is the publication’s benchmark assessment, not a guarantee that every app, game, or task will feel faster for every owner. Its comparison also lists 8GB of RAM for the S23 and 6GB for the iPhone 15, while noting that RAM is used differently by Android and iOS; those numbers should not be read as a stand-alone performance verdict. What were the launch prices, and which phone costs less now?

The following are historical US prices, not current retailer quotes. Samsung’s US unlocked MSRP list effective April 2023 priced the Galaxy S23 at $799.99 for 128GB and $859.99 for 256GB. Apple announced US iPhone 15 launch prices on September 12, 2023: $799 for 128GB, $899 for 256GB, and $1,099 for 512GB. [Samsung’s April 2023 MSRP list] [Apple’s September 2023 announcement]

  • It offers a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 48-120 Hz refresh rate plus up to ~ 1750 nits peak brightness and “Vision Booster,” meaning the screen stays bright and viewable even in strong sunlight — great if you use your phone outdoors a lot.
Capacity Galaxy S23 US unlocked MSRP (Samsung, April 2023) iPhone 15 US launch price (Apple, September 2023) Difference at those historical prices
128GB $799.99 $799 Effectively a tie; the iPhone list price was $0.99 lower.
256GB $859.99 $899 The S23 MSRP was $39.01 lower.
512GB Not stated for the base S23 in Samsung’s cited April 2023 US MSRP list $1,099 Apple listed a 512GB iPhone 15; the cited S23 list has no corresponding base-model price.

Those dates and capacities matter: the figures compare Samsung’s April 2023 MSRP list with Apple’s September 2023 launch prices, not prices observed on the same day. No current retailer price or stock is established here, so it is not possible to say which is cheaper now. For a present-day offer, compare the same storage capacity and check the seller, country, unlocked or carrier status, new or refurbished condition, warranty, and regional network compatibility.

Charging and box contents

Both phones use USB-C, but the charging details differ. Samsung’s accessory guidance says the base S23 does not support 45W charging by default and calls for a 5A cable for 25W and 45W charging; do not assume every charger marketed for the S23 series delivers its maximum output to this model. Apple supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W, and its fast-charge claim is around 50% in around 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not a direct battery-life comparison. [Samsung accessory guidance] [Apple specifications]

Apple says iPhone 15 includes a USB-C cable but not a power adapter or EarPods. Check what a seller includes before buying accessories separately. Samsung’s S23 accessory page is model-specific; the base S23 should not be confused with the S23 Ultra, which is the model associated with S Pen support. Samsung also says the S23 series does not support SD cards. [Apple specifications] [Samsung accessory guidance]

Which phone should you choose?

The Galaxy S23 is the stronger fit if

  • You prefer Android and Samsung’s One UI.
  • You want an adaptive display that can reach 120Hz.
  • You value a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera.
  • The specific S23 listing offers better value for your preferred capacity and condition.

The iPhone 15 is the stronger fit if

  • You prefer iOS and Apple’s services or already use Apple devices.
  • You want Dynamic Island and Apple’s camera-processing features.
  • You need the 512GB capacity listed for the iPhone 15 lineup.
  • Apple’s satellite-related safety features matter to you where available; regional and carrier specifications can differ. [Apple specifications] [Apple launch announcement]

Before buying, confirm that a listing is for the base Galaxy S23, not the S23+ or S23 Ultra, and compare like-for-like condition, storage, warranty, and network compatibility. For a close price decision, the offer in your market matters more than the historical launch figures.
