The right combination depends on what you need to hear or see—and on your Galaxy model and One UI version.
Choose what must still get through
Before changing settings, identify the alerts you cannot afford to miss. That might mean calls from selected people, one messaging app, alarms, or reminders. Keep the exceptions narrow: allowing every app or sound through can undermine a quieter setup.

Galaxy gives you three useful levers: Do not disturb for quiet periods and exceptions, Modes for context-based focus controls, and per-app notification settings for reducing visibility. They can be used together; none is a universal best choice.
Use Do not disturb for a recurring quiet period
Samsung’s US instructions for Do not disturb cover schedules, allowed alerts, and options for hiding notification surfaces. Open Settings and find Do not disturb, then set a schedule for the times you want fewer interruptions. Add only the exceptions you identified, such as selected calls or messages, particular apps, alarms, or other sounds.

Do not disturb can reduce interruptions without removing notifications from the phone. Depending on the available options and your choices, you can also hide notifications from places such as the lock screen or status bar. Review those visibility controls separately from the exceptions: allowing an alert and deciding where it appears are different choices.
Use a Mode when focus depends on context
A schedule works well for a repeated time window. If you want focus controls to follow a situation, create or edit a Mode instead. Samsung’s US guide describes Modes and Routines, including automatic conditions and focus options.

- Open Settings > Modes and Routines.
- Create a Mode or select one to edit.
- Under Stay focused, choose the controls you want, such as Do not disturb or Restrict app usage.
- Set an automatic condition if you want the Mode to turn on when that condition is met.
These controls serve different purposes: Do not disturb manages interruptions and exceptions, while Restrict app usage limits access to selected apps during the Mode. Check which controls your device offers before relying on an automatic setup; availability varies by model and software version. See Samsung’s Modes and Routines instructions.

Make selected apps less prominent without disabling them
If an app’s alerts are useful but its pop-ups or lock-screen previews are distracting, adjust how those notifications appear. Samsung’s One UI 8 guide documents per-app controls at Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] > Notification pop-up style. For an app on a One UI 8 device, choose a brief or detailed pop-up style as appropriate; the guide also describes per-app control of lock-screen notification content.

This is a One UI 8 path, not a guaranteed menu path for every Galaxy. Older versions may use different labels or organize these options elsewhere. Samsung’s One UI 8 overview shows the documented controls.
Pick the combination that matches the interruption

These controls answer different questions: when should the phone quiet down, what should be allowed through, and how visible should remaining alerts be? Choose each setting for the problem you are trying to solve rather than applying the same restriction to every app.

Restore an important alert that seems to have disappeared
If you stop seeing or hearing an alert you meant to keep, check the app’s notification access and category settings, whether the app is marked Deep sleeping, and whether Do not disturb is active. Samsung’s UK troubleshooting guide, updated 2026-05-21, lists these checks for missing or silent notifications.

- Check whether the app is listed as Deep sleeping.
- Review Do not disturb and its exceptions or schedule.
Samsung’s notification troubleshooting steps may help locate the setting on your device. Menu names and paths can differ.

Expect menu and feature differences
Samsung warns that settings and availability can vary by device, software version, carrier or wireless provider, and region. Its Do not disturb guidance for Hong Kong is specifically for Hong Kong products and separately notes variation by model, software, and purchase location; it is not a substitute for the US procedure above. If a label or option is missing, search Settings for the feature name or consult Samsung support for your device and region.
