On a Samsung Galaxy, Do Not Disturb (DND) silences calls, alerts, and notifications except for the people, apps, alarms, and sounds you allow. You can switch it on manually, set recurring schedules, and separately choose whether notifications remain visible. Menu names and available options vary by model, software version, and region.
Turn on Do Not Disturb
Samsung documents two ways to open the controls. From Quick settings, swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers, then touch and hold the Do Not Disturb icon. On the DND screen, switch it on. If the icon is not immediately visible, you may need to swipe down again to see more Quick settings.

You can also use the Settings app. Samsung Hong Kong documents the path Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb, then switch the setting on. That support page applies to products sold in Hong Kong, and Samsung notes that menus may vary by location: Samsung Hong Kong’s Do Not Disturb instructions.
If neither route matches your phone, look for the corresponding Do Not Disturb control in Settings or Quick settings rather than assuming every Galaxy uses the same menu path. Samsung’s US guide also documents the Quick settings route: Use Do not disturb mode on your Galaxy phone.

Set a recurring schedule
A schedule is useful when you want DND to activate automatically during a regular quiet period. Samsung’s US instructions support multiple schedules, so you can configure more than one recurring period if your phone offers that option.
- Open Quick settings and touch and hold the Do Not Disturb icon to open its settings.
- Tap Add schedule. On some devices, first tap Turn on as scheduled, then tap Add.
- Enter a schedule name and choose its preferences, such as when it should run and which exceptions to allow.
- Save the schedule and check that its switch is enabled.

Choose what can interrupt you
Do Not Disturb does not have to block every interruption. In its settings, look for exception groups such as Calls and messages, App notifications, and Alarms and sounds. The exact groups and choices depend on your phone.

Under Calls and messages, select the people or contact groups you want to be able to reach you. Depending on the device, options may include favorite contacts and allowing repeat callers. If you are expecting an important call, check this exception instead of assuming every call will be silenced. Samsung documents these kinds of options in its US and German support guides, while noting that availability varies: US guide and German guide.

Do not assume that every third-party messaging app or carrier handles exceptions identically. The available controls can depend on the device and software.
Allow selected apps
Under App notifications, choose which apps may still notify you during DND. This is separate from choosing which people can call or message you, so check both groups if you want a specific person’s communication to get through.

Keep alarms or other sounds
Under Alarms and sounds, choose whether alarms and other available sounds—such as media, touch sounds, calendar events, or reminders—are allowed. These controls let you silence incoming interruptions without necessarily silencing every sound from the phone.

Decide whether notifications stay visible
Silencing a notification and hiding its visual indicators are separate choices. Samsung’s US guide lists controls to hide non-exempt notifications, including full-screen notifications, app icon badges, entries in the notification panel, pop-up notifications, and status-bar icons. Choose the visual controls that suit you; you may prefer silent notifications to remain available on screen rather than disappear from view.

Match the setup to the kind of quiet you want

Why your Samsung menus may look different
Samsung’s instructions are not a universal map for every Galaxy phone: model, installed software, and region can change both menu paths and available settings. For example, Samsung Germany’s guide, last updated September 22, 2026, illustrates a Galaxy S26+ running Android 16 and One UI 8.5; it explicitly cautions that examples can vary by device, software, and region: Samsung Germany’s Do Not Disturb guide. Samsung Hong Kong likewise limits its guidance to products sold in Hong Kong and warns that models, steps, or settings may differ by location and purchase region.
Google also publishes Android-wide instructions for Modes and Do Not Disturb, with some steps applying only to Android 14 and later. Those instructions are not a guarantee that a Samsung phone uses the same labels or menu sequence: Google Android Help: Limit interruptions with Modes & Do Not Disturb.
