Samsung Expects Foundry Customers to Quadruple by 2029

Samsung says its Foundry customer count had grown about threefold since 2017 and expects it to reach about four times that baseline by 2029, while shifting toward AI and HPC.

Samsung expects its Foundry customer count in 2029 to be about four times its 2017 level, according to remarks by senior vice president Noh Mi-jung reported by Yonhap on September 29, 2026. The company has not disclosed an absolute customer count, so the forecast does not reveal how many customers it has now or how many it expects in 2029.

What does Samsung’s fourfold customer forecast mean?

The comparison is with 2017, when Samsung’s Foundry business became an independent unit—not with its current customer count. Noh said the number had already grown about threefold from that 2017 baseline by the time of her 2026 remarks. Neither the original baseline nor a current total was given in Yonhap’s report, so those multiples cannot be converted into a reliable number of customers.

Noh described the earlier growth and the target this way: “The number of customers has increased about threefold from when the foundry business was first established as an independent unit in 2017,” and “We expect the customer number to grow about fourfold by 2029.” These are company expectations reported from her remarks at Korea Premium Week 2026, not a guarantee of future results. Yonhap’s September 29, 2026 report does not provide a detailed customer roster or a definition that would make the figure directly comparable with another foundry’s customer count.

Why is Samsung targeting more AI and HPC business?

Samsung’s stated direction is to broaden a Foundry business described in the report as focused on mobile products toward artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). Noh’s remarks put the reported HPC share of the Foundry business at 5 percent in 2017 and 28 percent at the time of the 2026 remarks, with 66 percent forecast for 2029.

Year or period HPC share of Foundry business Status
2017 5% Reported figure from Samsung executive remarks
At the 2026 remarks 28% Reported figure from Samsung executive remarks
2029 66% Samsung forecast

These percentages refer to the Foundry business share, not the share of customers, sales, or revenue. Noh made separate projections for those measures: she said HPC customers were expected to make up more than half of the customer base by 2029, and HPC was expected to account for “well over half” of sales. The report gives no more precise percentages for either statement. Yonhap quotes Noh’s forecast: “By 2029, we expect HPC customers to account for more than half of our customer base, while HPC will also account for well over half of our sales.”

What manufacturing plans underpin the strategy?

Yonhap reported several planned process and factory milestones relevant to Samsung’s effort to expand advanced-node and HPC business. They are targets, not evidence that production or operations have already begun.

  • Samsung planned to begin mass production of its third-generation 2nm process in 2028.
  • It planned to begin mass production of its 1.4nm process in 2029.
  • Initial operations at the first fab in its Taylor, Texas, semiconductor complex were planned by the end of 2026, with construction of a second fab there planned within 2026.
  • Mass production at the Taylor complex’s second fab was targeted for 2030.

Separately, Samsung’s FY2025 results announcement said its Foundry Business targeted double-digit revenue growth and improved profitability in 2026, driven by advanced nodes. That is a near-term business objective; it does not independently substantiate the customer-count forecast.

What the forecast does—and does not—establish

The announcement provides a growth multiple and a direction of travel, but not the absolute customer totals needed to assess the scale of the forecast. It also does not establish whether Samsung will meet the target or how its results compare with other foundries. Evaluating progress will require more than a customer-growth percentage: the customer baseline and counting method, wins and retention, process-node readiness, HPC’s share of business and sales, and factory capacity ramp all matter.
