Samsung EX-Link is a serial-control connection on some Samsung TVs. With a compatible controller, it can support commands such as power, volume, input source, or channel. It is not a universal port: depending on the exact TV model, EX-Link may use a native 3.5 mm jack, a proprietary USB dongle, or may not be supported at all. Check the model’s manual before connecting an adapter or changing settings.
What Samsung EX-Link does
Samsung describes EX-LINK as a port for serial control, typically used by service technicians. In a compatible installation, an external control system connects directly to the TV and sends RS-232 commands. The name can be confusing because a connector’s appearance alone does not establish its purpose. A port that the manual labels service-only should not be assumed to accept RS-232 control commands.
EX-Link, RS-232, and Anynet+ are not the same thing
EX-Link is Samsung’s label for serial control on supported TVs; RS-232 describes the serial-control method and commands used in supported setups. Anynet+ is Samsung’s name for HDMI-CEC, which lets compatible devices connected over HDMI coordinate certain controls. Anynet+ does not mean the TV supports EX-Link or RS-232. How to tell whether your Samsung TV supports EX-Link
- Find the full model code. Use the label on the TV or the model information shown in its settings. The full code matters; model-family names alone may not identify the connector or control support.
- Open the manual for that exact model. Look for EX-Link, RS-232, serial control, and the description of the relevant port. Samsung’s RS-232 guidance discusses older models with rear EX-Link ports, but that does not establish support for every Samsung TV.
- Confirm the port’s stated function. If documentation identifies the port as service-only, do not treat it as an RS-232 control connection. If it documents EX-Link or RS-232 control, follow the model-specific connector and wiring instructions.
- Check the approved connection method and settings. Samsung documents native 3.5 mm EX-Link on some models and a proprietary USB dongle on others. Some models require control settings to be enabled; others are unsupported. Samsung’s Consumer RS232 Control Worksheet describes these variations.
Samsung’s worksheet says, “Most Samsung Consumer TVs can be controlled via RS232,” but it also notes unsupported models and different connection methods. “Most” is a qualitative statement, not a guarantee for a particular set or a published percentage.
Choosing a control route

When setup needs an installer
Samsung’s RS-232 guidance says some USB-based configurations involve service-menu settings and recommends that a professional installer make those changes. Samsung also describes these specialized installations as outside its phone-support scope. Do not apply a service-menu procedure from another model: first confirm compatibility and use current model-specific instructions or qualified installer guidance.

There is no universal EX-Link connector, adapter, setting, or command list established for the entire Samsung TV range. If the exact manual does not clearly identify RS-232/EX-Link support, ask Samsung or an AV installer to confirm the model before buying hardware or attempting configuration.
