On a Samsung Galaxy camera, 12M and 50M refer to image resolutions of roughly 12 million and 50 million pixels. A 50M setting records more pixels and may preserve more detail for cropping, but it does not guarantee a better photo. The exact options and how they behave depend on your Galaxy model, camera and software version; there is no single menu or result that applies to every phone.
What do 12M and 50M mean?
The “M” stands for megapixels: millions of pixels in an image. So 12M is approximately 12 million pixels, while 50M is approximately 50 million. Samsung describes 50MP as 50 million pixels in its Galaxy S23 Ultra camera guidance.

Pixel count describes the image’s resolution, not its overall quality. Focus, lighting, subject movement, lens condition and image processing all affect how a photo looks. A larger number by itself does not establish that a picture will be sharper, cleaner or better.
12M versus 50M: which should you choose?

For routine snapshots, 12M is a sensible default. Choose 50M when your phone offers it and you specifically want a high-resolution still. More recorded pixels can provide more potential detail, but results depend on the scene and the camera; Samsung’s guidance does not establish that 50M always produces a visibly better photograph.

Why might the camera use 12M even when the phone has a higher-resolution sensor?
Some Galaxy models adapt image capture to the lighting rather than using the highest resolution for every shot. Samsung’s guidance for the Galaxy S22 series describes supported adaptive behavior that can shift toward 12MP high-sensitivity capture in dim light or combine frames. That is a model-specific example, not a universal rule for Galaxy cameras.
In a Samsung Members camera-team reply dated September 18, 2023, the team said that illumination can affect whether a 50MP sensor produces a 12MP image; it also described 12MP output as a way to align outputs across camera lenses in that context. This explanation applies to the device-support question being answered, not necessarily to every Galaxy generation.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series guide also gives a specific example of resolution varying by model: it describes 50MP for the S22 and S22+ and 108MP for the S22 Ultra. A separate Samsung article about the Galaxy S23 Ultra describes 50MP and 200MP options. These examples show why one Galaxy phone’s settings should not be assumed to match another’s.

Why is 50M missing from the Camera app?
The option depends on the phone model, the camera or lens in use, and the selected shooting mode. The title does not identify a particular Galaxy device, and Samsung’s documentation does not establish one universal menu path for finding 50M. Check the instructions for your exact model and confirm that you are using a camera and mode that support its high-resolution option. If the setting still is not available, do not assume the phone is faulty: it may not offer 50M in that context.

If a photo looks soft, check more than the resolution setting
Changing from 12M to 50M will not correct missed focus, a smudged lens or an unsuitable shooting distance. Samsung’s camera troubleshooting guidance recommends checking factors such as lighting, distance, focus, fingerprints, dust and lens protectors.
- Gently clean the camera lens with a soft, dry microfiber cloth, as Samsung recommends.
- For a close subject, adjust the distance if the image is blurred; close-range focus and minimum focus distance can vary.
- Check that the subject is in focus and consider whether low light or movement is affecting the shot.
- If you use a lens protector, check whether it is clean and whether it could be affecting image clarity.
On high-resolution 200MP settings on some Ultra models, Samsung says the focus range can vary with aperture, subject position and distance. That specific guidance should not be assumed to describe every 12M or 50M camera.
