If you want to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, choose a player that explicitly supports Ultra HD Blu-ray playback. A regular Blu-ray player with “4K upscaling” is not a substitute: upscaling processes lower-resolution video, while UHD playback reads the UHD disc format. If your collection is limited to standard Blu-ray and DVD, a standard player is enough.
What is the difference between a standard and a 4K Blu-ray player?
The key difference is disc support. A standard Blu-ray player handles standard Blu-ray discs and, depending on the model, DVDs and CDs. A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player can play UHD Blu-ray discs; some models also play standard Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. For example, Samsung lists all four formats for its UBD-K8500. Look for the words “Ultra HD Blu-ray playback” in the specifications. A claim of “4K upscaling” alone means the player can process lower-resolution content to output an upscaled picture; it does not establish that the player can read a UHD disc. Samsung’s UBD-M7500 specification sheet distinguishes 4K playback from upscaling.
Which player should you buy?
Choose a standard Blu-ray player if
- You watch standard Blu-ray discs or DVDs and do not need UHD disc playback.
- You do not own or plan to buy 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
Choose a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player if
- You own or intend to buy UHD Blu-ray discs.
- You want one player for a mixed collection of UHD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD. Confirm support for every format you use; the Samsung UBD-K8500 page, for example, lists UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and CD playback.
- You have a compatible 4K UHD television for 4K viewing. Samsung says an HDR-capable TV is needed to view HDR content. Samsung UBD-M7500 specifications
Will a 4K player work with a standard Blu-ray collection?
It can, if the specific model lists the formats in your collection. Samsung’s UBD-K8500 is documented as playing UHD Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. That makes a UHD player a possible replacement for a standard player if you later add UHD discs, rather than a device that only handles 4K media. Check the model’s specifications instead of assuming all UHD players support the same formats.

What should you check before buying a Samsung UHD player?
Confirm the exact format and display support
Verify explicit Ultra HD Blu-ray disc playback, then check that your TV supports the output you want: Samsung specifies a 4K UHD TV for 4K viewing and an HDR-capable TV for HDR viewing. Upscaling is a separate feature and does not meet the UHD-disc requirement.
Match connections and audio to your setup
Check the exact player’s HDMI outputs and audio support against your television and receiver. Samsung’s UBD-K8500 product page reports two HDMI outputs, while the UBD-M7500 specification sheet lists Dolby Atmos support; these are model-specific details, not guarantees for every Samsung player.

Check availability, region, and condition
Samsung’s cited UK product pages mark both the UBD-K8500 and UBD-M9000 as “No longer available.” These are older models, so do not assume Samsung currently sells them. If considering remaining stock or a used unit, verify the model, region, condition, included accessories, and return policy. Current third-party inventory and prices are not established here.

In a May 4, 2016 announcement about the UBD-K8500, Samsung described it as offering “four times the resolution and 64 times higher color expression than conventional Blu-ray players.” That is a manufacturer comparison from a historical product announcement, not independent comparative testing or a current assessment of all players.
